Remember when the forecasters said we'd get maybe an inch or two?

We drove into Cambridge. We at first thought that the state highways would be a better bet, but pulled off onto the city roads because there wasn't a plow in sight and traffic was piling up because of the conditions.

Cambridge and Somerville were doing an excellent job, and Medford was keeping the major roads passable, too. Crews were out and getting it done.

Somebody at the state level really needs to stop confusing forecasts with observed reality. This is the second storm this season where they have responded late and and with too few resources, all because the actual storm conditions didn't match the predictions.

I saw plenty of plows pass by this afternoon during the first flurry that didn't even stick. Now that there's accumulation, they're nowhere to be found. I'm on a main drag that stayed as clear as could be expected even through the worst of last year.

Somebody screwed the pooch at a high level tonight.

I drove up 93 at 6:30 thinking the forecasts were reasonably accurate. South of 128 it was 25MPH with the road more or less uncleared, some what better north of128 but still very slow. Once to Dascomb Rd in Andover it was clear sailing.

I drove to JP from Chestnut Hill at around 7pm. I first turned onto Route 9 thinking it'd be at least partially cleared up, but nope, it was covered in snow. I watched a car spin out and get stuck, and then I decided to get off and go onto Hammond Pond Parkway. Went about 12 miles per hour the entire way to JP, and while my tiny non-4WD car was sliding every which way, thankfully everyone on the road was being decent and equally cautious.

Rewarded myself with beer.

There's way more than predicted and it's fairly heavy lifting. Not the light fluffy stuff of last year. Have to admit, it's kind of pretty though.

The silver lining is that this removes "snow drifting onto the tracks" from the T's wheel o' excuses that they'll be spinning Monday morning. Now, as for the other 36 standard excuses...

Last night I watched one of the contracted snow plows get stuck going up a hill on the Jway which subsequently blocked traffic for a few minutes. Then people had to sneak by very carefully as the truck managed to skid to the center of the Jway and then spun its wheels furiously trying to make it up the hill.

Driving around 6pm anywhere near the Jamaica Pond was difficult. I watched a bunch of cars get stuck trying to make it up one of the side streets from the Jway (yay 2 wheel drive with old all-season tires) and then a bunch of people get stuck on the hill to Faulkner Hospital.

Whoever was supposed to be watching the roads screwed up majorly. It's not like they didn't have sufficient warning when NYC went from having a foot of snow (which isn't all that big of a deal) to having a complete travel ban.

But no worries, 1-3 inches here in Boston.

Then we end up looking like DC and Kentucky where there isn't enough equipment to pre-treat the roads.
