Barricaded man forces shutdown of major Roslindale intersection at rush hour

UPDATE: WHDH reports the incident now being investigated as a possible "swatting" or hoax call that brought the SWAT team.

Police have shut the intersection where Canterbury Street, Cummins Highway and American Legion Highway come together as they deal with a man barricaded inside a house on American Legion Highway near Stella Road. American Legion Highway is shut at the other end at the car wash.

That intersection is a mess on good days, so blocking it cannot be good.

Btw, I was wondering about the news copters, and I knew you would give the news on it.

Yeah I was wondering what was going on. Thankfully having driven through Roslindale Square about 10 minutes ago, it didn't seem to be affecting that area all too much. Do we know why the man is barricaded in the house?

Beyond that, I don't yet know.

Thanks for reporting this. I watched the copter as I came home, but there's nothing on the tv news yet. Glad I came home thru Brookline today instead of the other way around Franklin Park.

From news media, it was being investigated as a swatting incident. That is a false call where the SWAT Team is called in.

I'm not finding any, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

And, yes, that's awful.

I didn't want to say anything at the time (in fact, I tweeted very little about the incident while I was listening to the scanner the whole time, because the details were quite alarming even to me, and thankfully were untrue) but it sounded like a false incident from the start.

It actually sounded more like the fairly common hostage/kidnapping scam gone wrong (reported to police when they were told not to) than the swatting call to elicit a police response.

I could be wrong, but BPD coincidentally put out a release today advising of this very type of incident...
