Bldup reports the Ballas Group, which has built residential projects in Jamaica Plain, South Boston and Newton, paid $1.95 million for the land at South and McBride streets where James' Gate used to be.

The parcels involved last sold for $135,000 in 1997.

Good for the owners. Bad for those of us that moved to JP because of places like the Gate. But also good for those of us thinking a move to cheaper parts might be in order. I cannot believe what is happening to real estate values in my neighborhood.

The Grove Street Families is not going to be happy about this.

for $5000.
Sounds like a good deal, no?

Did the owners of the James Gate get to cash in at least or did the whole thing get closed due to the restaurant landlord deciding to sell the property?

The owners of James Gate were the land owners as well.

...printing money or something?

And how soon before these developers and the ppl that end up living there start bitching about the projects across the street?

living by D street projects in Southie or ANYWHERE in Charlestown (as half that neighborhood is projects). Hasn't seemed to effect development or retardedly high rents/property values there yet.

True but this will be interesting. Because goodness forbid lower rent ppl live near the new elite.

I never though James Gate was any good - I didn't understand why ppl ate there. I understand grabbing a beer but the food was horrible IMO.

On the pub side, it was a nice option for when you wanted to eat outside, even when dining with small kids.

Quite a bit of land there when you factor in the parking lot across the street from the restaurant. Couple blocks from Green St Orange Line. Good site.

Walking distance to a fantastic bar...wait, no, never mind

What are you talking about? The Jeanie Johnston is a top-notch pub! Where else can the toxic stench of cheap bathroom disinfectant be smelt FROM THE STREET ?

I love when they throw a menu at you and say "Half of that is not available, just lemme know what you're lookin at and i'll tell you if we've got it" before turning right around and walking away.

Great pub.

I miss James Gate and wish something similar were taking its spot but JP is seeing an influx of restaurants with a few more scheduled to be open in the next couple months. Overall I think things are looking up.

What I said when they first closed down:

Wonder if the pull of selling to build more luxury condos was just too much?

Maybe to one of the owners. One owner wanted to buy the other out and they just couldn't agree on a price.

I rarely comment, but this one hit hard. I lived on South St. across from the James Gate from 2006-2010. So many great memories. I know there's been noise about the quality of the food, and I do believe I saw it decline a bit over the years, but this place had the kind of old-school JP soul that few places have. I know many of us hoped it would somehow reopen/be reinvented.

THE FIREPLACE! :>(

I've been thinking of the friendly faces who worked there as well. Best wishes to Brian and everyone who made the Gate great.

We were there for the best of JP! A group of us had a rotating dinner club every Friday from the ages of 24 to 28. The Gate, Doyle's, Parish, and the occasional dive bar night at the Quencher. Times I will always look back on fondly.

I hear you on the fireplace. Was such a treat on a nasty fall/winter/spring night to walk to the Gate and spend time with friends or a book in front of a roaring fire. The Dogwood has a gas fireplace...not the same but it is something. Plus, their menu is great and the space is ideal for groups, especially groups with kids.

The Dogwood has absolutely been our "replacement Gate" and their food is just incredible. I love that place!

"old-school JP".

Isn't that entire commercial block being sold? When I drove by there earlier this week all of the store fronts were empty.

the block further down South Street, towards Forest Hills, not at South and McBride, where the Gate was? All the storefronts are vacant excepting Il Panino Express, the landlord wants ridiculous money and isn't particularly easy to deal with per an acquaintance who was looking to open shop...

The liquor store and laundromat next door are open and not going anywhere soon.

The business was ran by one partner.

The other partner owned the land and structures.

The partner who ran the business shut it down, by not paying the taxes.

The partner who owns the land last his money maker (the bar business)
and now has had to sell said parcel.

I had good times there too...many...

It was just a matter of time. I too have been missing pints at James Gate, however I welcome beautifying the area. The place has never been much to look at, and ever since the closing it has gotten worse. Not to mention the seedy folk that "hang out" in the empty parking lot. I look forward to seeing what happens there -- and if its new condos -- welcome our new neighbors.
