Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of the Commonwealth.
Blood and destruction shall be so in use,
And dreadful objects so familiar,
That hens shall but smile when they behold
Their chicks quartered with the hands of war,
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds,
And Meleagris' spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a rafters' gobble
Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the Toms of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

some 20 years ago: a tom and hen and six little ones in tow. It was such a novelty, I pulled my car over to marvel at them. Now I see them everywhere. The sight of a puffed-up tom is still impressive.
