Not surprised. Despite the nice weather, traffic has been particularly awful this week. People have been doing all kinds of stupid things like driving and passing in bike lanes. This was probably one of those drivers avoiding the backups on Rt.2/16 by cutting through Brighton St./Hittinger st. in Belmont and getting antsy.
Second, WTF?? I can't imagine any driving maneuvers that even result in this...it's actually impressive that a car can get into that position and not take out the pole.
This pole has a "guy wire", which is a support wire that goes diagonally from the top of the pole down to the ground a few feet away from the pole. You can just barely see it near the front right corner of the car, and also near the back bumper. My guess is that this car went up onto the curb for whatever reason, then "climbed" the wire. I could not find any videos, unfortunately, but if you search "car guy wire", you'll see lots of pictures just like this one. So, it's not totally unheard of.

Since this is in Belmont are we sure this isn't one of Mitt's car elevators at work?

I'm not sure that a professional stunt driver could accomplish that one time in one hundred attempts.

Well, the rules regarding MIT hacks
is that the hack should not damage nor cause harm - not sure if this would qualify.

Look at the angle
You're right there. From the angles of the guy wire at back and front of the car, the front right wheel is hung on the wire.
One winter day in Townsend
I saw a sweet Chevelle SS that had split a fork in the road, ridden up a snowbank, and was giving a phone pole a big hug.
It was . . . adorable.
