East Boston's no-drone zone

No drone zone at Piers Park in East Boston

Jordan Frias spotted this sign at an entrance to Piers Park in East Boston, which Massport probably put there due to its location near Logan Airport.

Under the federal guidelines, most of East Boston is a drone free zone.

Putting up these signs is futile but Drones really can be annoying. It's like a swam of angry hornets flying around your head while you try to enjoy the day. Many are surprising loud and their owners completely oblivious to the people they are circling.

Sure, drones aren't any worse then kids on dirtbikes, construction equipment, etc. And yes, it's the city. But I'm not complaining about efforts to keep them out of public places like this.

One reason to put up signs like this is so that you can give people tickets more easily. They can say, but there isn't any sign!! and try to use that as an excuse for idiotic behavior if there isn't one. A sign/declaration of the rules of a park make it easier.

However, I think they should just create 1 sign that lists the rules of the park instead of a ton of different style signs.

They do, and people ignore them. Brophy Park just a couple blocks away is impossible to cross without some entitled dog-owner's offleash mongrel jamming its nose into your crotch, despite the clear "no offleash dogs" signs everywhere. I'm fine with the dogs being there within the posted guidelines but it is explicitly NOT an offleash park.

People ignore the rules if they think they can get away with it. I'm cool with making it easier to fine the entitled little turds.

There's a dog park just down the East Boston Greenway.

Oh yeah, as a woman living alone it seems Iike a grand idea to feud with entitled bros who already consider themselves above the law. There's no way that could go wrong for me and if it did, there'd definitely be no-one who blamed me for taking it into my own hands instead of reporting to police who just don't care. Genius.

But then chose to let it go. She's pissed and I was a convenient punching bag.

Moving on.

(*whispers* we also didn't know the dog owners are entitled bros. now we do)

Does anyone else think the prohibition on bikes looks like the handy work of someone with a stencil and red spray paint?

What can you do in this place, besides launch your sailboat?

I had my rehearsal dinner there for free. Many people go there to play in the awesome playground, has some cool sprinklers and stuff. Others go to sit on the lush grass and have a picnic, read a book, or play some soccer.

The park isn't huge, but good for the neighborhood.

You can walk, go for a jog, have a picnic, take photos of the view, read a book, fly a kite, stand on your head.

Some parks are for "doing stuff," others are simply meant to be a peaceful green space where the public can walk, sit, chat, read, and spend time with their families without being molested by the noisy and intrusive toys of others.

Go to a dog park with your dog. Go to a bike trail with your bike. The Greenway entrance is like 3 blocks away. Eastie has no shortage of special-purpose parks - a new dedicated dog park just opened. Not every space is appropriate for every use, and getting huffy about the existence of non-dog, non-bike parks instead of just going to the appropriate space is a waste of outrage.

My comment was tongue in cheek, but I do appreciate the list of activities aside from biking, dog walking and flying drones that one could do outside. I will consult this comment next time I go to the park!

The bike and red circle look normal, but the red cross does look like someone spray painted it afterwards.

That said, wouldn't a red circle with a bike in it mean no bikes anyway?

Bikes and dogs in parks don't mix... seriously, don't even go there.

The No Bikes sign is dopey. Surely they mean no bike riding, right? Like, it's perfectly okay to ride one's bike to the park and walk it in with you, park it, sit, and have a picnic, right?

Walk your bike sign.

The Massport/FAA flyer doesn't say East Boston is a no-drone zone. It says that anywhere within 5 miles of the airport, you have to call the control tower before using a drone.

How does this work in practice? Has anyone tried calling the Logan tower before using their drone at, for example, MIT?

Is it just me, or does the drone symbol look like a ninja practicing nun chucks with a comically-oversized codpiece?
