Not that I'm a fan of highwayside suburban sprawl, but if it's going to exist anyway, I'd much rather have Houston's look:

Note the lack of sidewalks in the MA picture, and the landscaping and decorations on the overpass in the Houston one.

Notice the lack of pedestrians in the Houston scene.
Adding sidewalks doesn't make a traffic sewer any less of a traffic sewer.

If a road is wide and has a lot of traffic, I won't mind walking there if there are well-designed sidewalks and crosswalks. (Of course it would be more pleasant with a narrower street and less motorized traffic, but that's not what I'm comparing here.)
If there are no sidewalks, it really really sucks. Especially in the winter when there are snow berms.

There are two pedestrians in the Houston scene, and zero in the MA scene.

It may not even be the ugliest street in Lynn. Besides, the New Angle Glass sign looks really cool when it's working.
The ugliest thing on the Lynnway is the Walmart. Second ugliest just may be the Starbucks. (sorry - don't like them, but I do understand how it's good for the city, personal opinions aside)
Yes, there's room for improvement and I welcome the new developments.

There are many places in America (and Canada) that look like that.

I think Mystic Ave. in Medford and Somerville has it beat.

I'll pick the Melnea Cass methadone mile. Can't believe how bad the city has let it become down there.

Don't see potholes. Don't see litter left by people who live like animals. It's not so bad.

The main commercial street in my hometown of Tucson Arizona was declared by Life magazine to be ugliest street in America in 1970.
Compare this to the Lynnway:

I don't know about ugliest, but the 3 green arrow traffic lights entering the rotary at the northeast end of the Lynnway sure do win dumbest traffic lights in the country, given that one always has to YIELD when entering a rotary and green arrows mean "proceed full steam ahead, you have the right of way"
