Police hunt possible serial attacker in Belle Isle Marsh: One elderly man dead, one injured

UPDATE: Arrest made for one attack.

Three days after an elderly man was found with what turned out to be fatal injuries in Belle Isle Marsh on the East Boston/Revere line, another man was attacked in the marshes, State Police report.

State Police, who emphasize they still do not know how the first man suffered his injuries, report they are looking to see if the two incidents are related and say they have stepped up patrols in the 251-acre reservation, which straddles the borders of East Boston, Revere and Winthrop.

On May 20, State Police say, Daniel Pepe, 83, of East Boston, was found with serious injuries in the marsh. He died June 1, of injuries so serious he was never able to tell doctors or police what happened to him, State Police say.

On June 1, a Lynn resident, 67, was walking through the reservation when he was attacked by a man described as white, in his late 20s or 30s, approximately 5’9” tall, and wearing a hat, t-shirt and shorts that were beige or brown. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, State Police say.

Anybody with information can contact Trooper Joel Balducci at 617-727-8817, ext. 5670.

Nice of you to blame the victims. Can someone take a walk without being attacked and have someone like you make assumptions?

I didn't detect any victim blaming by JG at all.

In fact the park is a gay cruising area, in addition to the dog walkers, the joggers, the bird watchers, and others. Knowing this park and the people who go there, these 2 attacks feel like gay bashing to me. Just my opinion. And no, I'm not blaming the victim. The guy who attacked these 2 men is a criminal, whether it's gay bashing or not.

I hope bird watchers take notice. It could save their life.

I didn't know the marsh was a supposed spot for gays. I don't think the intention of the commenter was anti-gay but I could easily see it interrupted that way.

Bird voyeurism is a victimless crime.
Battery and murder(?) on homo sapiens is victim-laden.

I hope they nail this (sexist alert) guy.

There was not even a hint of blame in their tone; just speculation on a possible motive. Cool your jets.

If an 83 year old guy was attacked it seems unlikely the attacker was specifically targeting guys (or anyone) out cruising for sex.

If you're gonna attack somebody, an 83 year old is an easy target. And if you think an octogenarian is not looking for sex, think again.

An 87 year old was busted by local PD in a park in my town. For propositioning the cop. It was a pretty sad affair.

I went there for the first time during spring migration to look for birds... didn't see any of what you described. Way to gay bash and victim blame though!
