WBUR updates Web look

New WBUR Web site

WBUR went live today with an all-new look for its Web site featuring large photos and type on its stories and an easier way to listen to the station online - just click the little button in the left-hand corner (or the bar at the bottom of the mobile-friendly mobile version).

I hope they got rid of the bugs.

The app crashes more often than not whenever I try to use it.

I hate, hate, hate the trend to put huge photos that take up half or more of the screen real estate, shout out at you and require you to scroll forever to see what's available. More and more websites are adopting this template. I'm sure it eats up tons of mobile bandwidth too.

The new look of the bostonglobe.com sports teams pages is almost as hideous but at least there's only one huge picture at the top. The Washington Post daily email is another. Give me the nytimes.com home page any time (until they decide to follow these other sites off a cliff).

Or if they are just following a trend.

The only time I visit wbur.org is when I hear something on the radio and want to either hear it again or read the transcript. The site doesn't support either of those features. The live stream has no dvr or interactive transcript capability.

There are tools available that can do that.

Argh, I just went to listen to an OnPoint podcast, as I do on the weekends, and the top third of the page is now essentially lost to whitespace/branding. I have to scroll down to even start to find the descriptions of the most recent shows.

But what really struck me as I scrolled further down the page was how much it all resembled clickbait. I found myself reading the title of a show like "Global Pushback on American I.T Giants" and mentally adding "and you won't believe what happens next!"

I can't for the life of me figure out why this is a trend. Is it catering to increased tablet use?
