Wanted for attack at South Station.
Transit Police are seeking the public's help to identify a guy they say nearly killed another man following a "lengthy argument" in the commuter-rail waiting area at South Station on Saturday.
Police say the suspect got out what appeared to be a kitchen knife and repeatedly thrusted it at his opponent, a 36-year-old local man - who they say was able to fend off a potentially fatal blow to his abdomen with his forearms. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of "defensive" wounds on his arms and has since been released, police say.
Because the victim could have died without his quick action, police will charge the suspect with assault with intent to murder when they find him.
He's described as black, about 5'8" and 160 lbs. He wore a gray shirt with a white shirt underneath, black pants and black sneakers with red trim and carried a black and red backpack, police say. The Transit Police have a centrally located booth at South Station where at any given moment, 3-4 officers stand and shoot the breeze.

Not only did they miss the chance to intervene after a "lengthy argument", but they let the guy escape. All right in front of them, if the details provided are true.

There were witnesses, but the T isn't saying cops were just standing there watching two guys scream at each other for a long time.

Maybe I wasn't clear. The supposition that the T police were incompetent was mine and I did not thing it was coming from you.
My qualifier about "if the reports are true" was referring only to the location and length of the argument that led to the stabbing, as reported by the police. So to be clear, I am saying if the lengthy argument happened in the commuter rail waiting area, which is directly next to the police desk where many of us including a Uhub commenter observe the police often "shooting the breeze", then the police must be incompetent.
However after my post , another commenter said that the police staffing is reduced on weekends, so maybe that is the reason they apparently didn't see what was going on right in front of them. Maybe they weren't even there at the time.
In any case, it seems like another case of "security theater", meant to make us feel better, but not really stopping crime.
After all, crimes never happen on the weekend, so that's a good reason to cut back on security on the weekends. (Sarcasm)

The Transit Police announced some changes a few months ago. The when/how/wheres of policing the T have changed. This means a reduced coverage on weekends compared to what we've been used to for years now. On top of that, I hear the T belt-tightening means less cops out there as well.

The General Manager of the Washington Metro recently made a policy change and ordered the Transit Police to report to the public on a daily basis any violent crime that happens that day.I hope the new General Manager adopts the same policy.
