Jamaica Plain News reports the impending demise of Canto 6 on Washington Street, across from the police station.
Ed. question: Given what else is happening at and near that intersection, how long before a developer files plans for a six-story apartment building there?

NOOOOOO! Say it isn't so! We depend on them for really great sandwiches and wonderful baked goods.

How long was the lag in closing the Gate and announcing that development? That long.
Maybe Canto 6 can move to Roslindale and get our bakery county back up to where it should be. We've lost Sugar and the one that was never open on the square (Johns?) Lots of storefronts available!

I'm not sure if they'd put up a "for rent" sign if they plan to tear down the building and put up a bigger one but who knows. Its taking forever around this part of JP for approved projects to get going. I can think of 4 on this part of Washington street where developments are supposed to go up but nothing has yet happened with the existing buildings. The empty buildings are a bummer.

Oh wow -- this is depressing news. I love this place! Fingers crossed that they reopen soon. The linked article suggests it is possible.
Come to Roslindale!

That is sad news! I love Canto 6...and Bread and Butter before that. Maybe they could come to Roslindale. With Tony's Market in its new location closer to Metropolitan, I'd love it if Canto 6 opened nearby. Our side of Rosi needs some variety from all the barber and nail shops.

Many of these old school places are getting torn down as transplants change the demand of the neighborhoods, or the owners retire and sell, or new owners jack up the rent.
Not sure I'd call Canto 6 "old school"

Given that it only opened up a few years ago.

Plenty of other longtime establishments have closed for the reasons mentioned about. This one being recent doesn't really change the trend. Transplants to these areas, rising rents, and retirements make these well liked places leave.
Quite a few.

I can't remember exactly but it was Bread and Butter starting c 2002 and then replaced by Canto maybe 7 years ago? Time flies when you are surrounded by amazing baked goods.
I'll be very sad to see them go.

This website has documented the closures of many long time establishments, even if this one was more recent.
