Citizen complaint of the day: That's not a knife ...
By adamg on Mon, 08/01/2016 - 1:22pm
A concerned citizen wants the city to remove this "very offensive" sticker of a knife on a bike rack outside City Feed in Jamaica Plain.
The city responds that's not a knife, that's "actually a picture of a comb," but it'll send somebody out to remove the sticker anyway.

The sticker is not offensive
But the fact that somebody actually considers this a "bike rack" is.
OK, I'll Bite
If it's not a bike rack, what is it?

Yes, it's technically a bike rack
It's just that this particular design happens to be the most useless bike rack I've ever seen. And apparently at least six other uHubbers agree with me on that point.
I find those post-and-ring
I find those post-and-ring bike posts to work perfectly fine. All I want in a bike rack is a vertical pole, and some sort of loop or large object on top to keep the locked bike from being lifted off.
The most useless type is the old "toaster rack", which makes it hard to lock anything besides the front wheel (a good way to keep your wheel safe but lose the rest of your bike, or maybe keep the whole thing but get a bent wheel). https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikepgh/5123483285
I college I followed everyone else's lead and lifted my front wheel up and over the crossbar of the toaster rack, which allowed me to lock the front wheel and frame. That doesn't work any more now that I have a front fender.
Tell me more
For serious.
I use those racks all the time and haven't had a problem -- but maybe my bike/lock combo happens to work well and others don't...
You don't bike, do you?
These are waaaaayyyyy better than those most useless"radiator" style racks that make frame locking impossible.
These racks work just fine when I use them. The only problem with them is that they hold two bikes and there aren't enough of them on many streets.
The only problem with them is
That was my point , they don't hold enough bikes and are few and far between. Sorry if I wasn't clearer in my original post.
These are all over Harvard Square and other parts of Cambridge
and they work quite well.
A picture of a bike rack
... with a star fleet locking only emblem on it.
obviously,
it's 2/3 of the deathly hallows.
THIS is a knife.
"I see you've played knife-y comb-y before."
I am not sure why a generic
I am not sure why a generic sticker of a knife is offensive in the first place, beyond the graffiti angle.
Lend me your comb
I wonder if the person who stuck the sticker is named Kookie.
Those of delicate sensibilities
are sensitive types.
Multitasking
Texting this complaint to BOS:311 while clutching the pearls... impressive.
HA!
In other news Crocodile Dundee hired as city correspondant.
Two dollars.
Shut down the comments for rest of the day
It won't get much better than that. Good job sir/mam!

If you're not offended, you're not trying.
Uhhhh, I'm pretty sure that
Uhhhh, I'm pretty sure that anybody who thinks a comb is offensive is of age to collect Social Security.
Ceci n'est pas une pipe
Lost opportunity by the city to respond with this

Poor thing
It must have been very traumatic! The city needs to declare J.P. a Safe-Space zone. Nobody should have to put up with something so outrageous and unprogressive, in J.P. of all places!
Those aren't pillows!
RIP Dell Griffith.
Aside from who the hell cares...
whether it is a knife or another traumatizing, offensive image, why on earth is anyone calling the city to remove a...sticker?? Seriously. Go into City Feed. Get a plastic knife (ooh--another knife! The horror!) Go outside. Remove sticker yourself. Or sheesh--get creative and use your thumbnail, a nickel, the toothless side of your house key. The thought of a city employee being required to remove a small piece of adhesive paper makes me scream inside.
