Cambridge Day reports people were surprised the Evergood Market closed suddenly last month, but hardly shocked, since the place seemed to have been in a slow decline in recent months.

So sad

I've been shopping here for 20+ years. I knew something was up, but the employees were keeping mum. I will miss being able to pop over there for Iggy's breads or Capone's pasta or any of the other useful stuff they had.
Now maybe that neighborhood

Now maybe that neighborhood can finally get the drugstore or bank that it really needs.

I don't understand. There's just one bank (Cambridge Trust) and one pharmacy (Rite Aid) in the neighborhood halfway between Harvard and Porter.

of my time at the Quad and on Gray Street during much of the 70s, though I never actually shopped there much. I think the Montrose Spa is still there, but probably doesn't resemble what it was then.
Bring back HHOP and Charlie's Beef 'n Beer!
HHOP was probably my first experience with Greek-style pizza, probably still my favorite, though hard to come by around Audubon Circle since the place run by the Turkish family where Gyu Kaku is now shut down 20 or 25 years ago. And I think we personally financed the bringing of half the HHOP family into the country.
Charlie's had a great antipasto, with tuna, hardboiled eggs, tomatoes, salami, cheese, pepperoncini, who can remember what else. And dirt cheap, which was good, because I was pretty broke in those days.

Harvard House of Pizza is still there on the corner of Mass Ave & Martin Street, where it's been for decades. (Three Aces Pizza OTOH has been closed for years and the building they were in, with a dry cleaners and a barber shop) remains undeveloped by Harvard despite them kicking the businesses out.)

I thought sure HHOP was gone. I can't even remember how I got there/exactly where it was, but now that I see the straight shot over from the foot of Gray Street to Mass. Ave., that must be it. Even closer than the Evergood.
Now I'm going to have to make my way over to test my memories. Even though it's usually too much of an effort for me to get out to Coolidge Corner about half a mile away from my apartment.
Never did Three Aces, mentioned elsewhere, even though I was in a dorm half a block away for a year and it was the goto place on campus.
And Charlie's I know for a fact is long gone. Sigh.

... the one that has (or long ago HAD) a sign featuring the Leaning Tower of Pisa?
It's this one:

Can't recall if it ever had LTOP on the sign.

... the place with the LTOP sign NOT being on the corner -- but this is certainly pretty close to the place I remember from the early 70s.
