Who knew the Big Dig had a director of urban architecture?

John Daley disgustedly marvels that mayor has no say whatsoever over major development projects in the heart of the city, because the turnpike authority has final say over what's built atop the Big Dig. He notes this Globe article on the controversy over the proposed Armenian Genocide memorial, in which Big Dig Director of Urban Architecture Fred Yalouris is quoted. Hmm, given the leaks in the tunnels, does that mean they also have a Big Dig Harbormaster?

Armenian Genocide
Just to point out, "Holocaust", while it might be a generic word, has come to be associated with the big WWII holocaust, so it might be misleading to say it here. The genocide in question is the one of 1915 or so, which is still hotly debated; the Turkish government still does not recognize it as a genocide. Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk faced jail over for "public denigration" for calling it a genocide last year.
I wonder if this controversy played at all into the Mayor's position.
Menino and the Turks
You're right about "Holocaust," I've changed the wording in the post to "Genocide."
As for the controversy over it, I'm doubting it had anything at all to do with Menino's position - he's never been afraid to say what he thinks, and at the risk of offending the Turkish government, outside of Anatolia and Asia Minor, isn't it really more a question of how many people were killed, not whether killings took place at all?
I have to admit: I honestly
I have to admit: I honestly know very little about this other than having read a couple of articles, but my impression was that Turkey objects to the term "genocide", as it implies an intent to systematically kill an entire ethnic group, and they insist that it was a deportation justified by wartime.
