Still, as you stand there on a Red Line platform with 90,000 other sweating, steamed riders, you could do worse than call up the MBTA Excuse Generator:

We have a wonderous explanation of why this is a reasonable thing for a transit system to do but, sadly, it won't fit in the tiny amount of space remaining now that we've rambled on and on and on.
