What is it about Roslindale Square that makes drivers flip out?
By adamg on Tue, 09/20/2016 - 9:56am
Shortly after 9 a.m. a driver making the turn from South Street onto Belgrade Avenue in Roslindale somehow flipped over at Birch Street.
In the Keep Roslindale Quirky Facebook group, Jim Nichols reports nobody appeared hurt, at least.
Police had to shut the road, causing issues for drivers and riders of the T bus routes that go down Belgrade. The road was reopened around 9:45 a.m.

Spiny Shells of Roslindale?
Too many spiny shells.
Traffic calming needed
The stretch from AutoZone to Sullivans is speedway when there isn't traffic to slow down the dumbass drivers. A few raised sidewalks would be a good addition but I think not feasible on a bus route.
Either raised sidewalks
or speed bumps....one or the other would be the best solution to the problem of drivers speeding through that area.
Before anyone comments on how
Before anyone comments on how speed bumps screw with emergency vehicles - we have solutions for that

How about a stoplight?
Then everybody would stop when it goes red.
There is one
There is a light at the sharp left hand corner before where this happened. This accident clearly happened after someone drove through a green light though so it wouldn't change anything.
Clearly?
Do you estimate a different speed through a green light versus through a red light?
What?
My assumption is that the driver lost control of their vehicle but after driving at speed through a green light, not running a red.
Unless you were being snarky, your original suggestion of a stop light is irrelevant if the driver won't stop at them. However, by and large, stop lights are more often observed even by terrible Boston drivers than not, right?
Perhaps a strongly worded sign...
I agree with you that physical traffic calming is the only thing that will work in this environment. I was making a joke.
Like people stop for red
Like people stop for red lights in Boston.
Easily Explained
I would bet $5 that this person, like most people, was just driving way to fast around the left turn where this happened and rolled over. Double your money if they also ran the light that is at that intersection because they thought it was stupid. There seem to be a large number of people who think they should just be able to drive up Washington street through the square instead of having to go around this and, to reduce their pent up frustration, just pretend that they can drive the same speed as they would on Washington Street (and ignore all lights and cross walks). A raised cross walk on that street, and a more visible stop light, would do a world of good.
Agree here
I've been driving that road for nearly 50 years and at best you can do about 20 mph. 25 mpg is pushing it. This person was driving too fast through a thickly settled business district.
They were in the wrong.
They don't need spreed bumps.
They don't need fancy mechanical do-hickies that retract.
Maybe they were making a phone call, texting, or chasing Pokemon Go?
All people need to do is learn how to drive and follow the rules
We keep throwing our collective hands up in the air and implement these knee-jerk solutions to prevent things like this. Well, sometimes you cannot fix stupid.
If "Quirky Roslindale" keeps this up we'll be adding speed bumps to the sidewalks because people pushing baby carriages move too fast.
I'm beginning to think it's becoming "Squirrelly Roslindale."
It was an accident. No one was seriously hurt. Move on. Sheesh.
All people need to do is
And how shall we achieve this? By asking? Maybe we should legalize speed cameras in Massachusetts.
Traffic calming is basically the only thing that works reliably in places like this to get people to slow down. It doesn't have to be a speed bump, but it should be something similar.
Must be something to be with
Must be something to be with Villagers........
Squares
Wouldn't that be squares?
Help me out here. My boss lives there, uses both interchangeably.
Square(s)
Roslindale Sq is made up of several veteran memorial intersections or "squares."
For example, Washington, Poplar, and Corinth are Canty Sq. The sign is there. Just look sometime.
The Village is where the idiot lives.
Oh, don't wade into that
Whether it is a Square, Village, or Triangle is a quagmire you don't want to visit.
