About a month ago, a news story from South Carolina started going viral. Cops were investigating reports from some students that they saw someone in the woods near their school wearing a clown outfit.
When the Internet found out, kids started laughing about how there were people stomping around looking for a clown that hadn't even been accused of doing anything wrong but had cops wasting their time investigating anyways. It has snowballed into other kids now calling in clown hoaxes across the country after reading the initial stories and all the follow up ones that keep coming out and making broad splashes on the Internet.

The kids too lazy to even phone it in are still starting rumors of clowns in their neighborhoods. I heard of clown rumors in multiple suburbs yesterday.
