If you want to volunteer on Thanksgiving, that's great, but to really help, you might want to start volunteering now, so you can learn the ropes and be more useful on the big day. And, of course, volunteer after Thanksgiving too.

There has been a lot flying around the intertubes today, but Cat Victory Speech has come through with the most elite white privilege thought of the day; Are Tutors Needed In Dorchester?
Your statement is operating under the assumption that people in Dorchester are generally dumb and in need of your specific help. I don't have any scientific numbers to back me up, but I can assure you that probably no more than any other place in our Commonwealth are there, on average, a greater or lesser number of people in need of your help for the basics when it comes to learning. Sure, Brookline might have more dentists, and a torpedo into the 520 from Rowes Wharf to Hingham might knock a lot of MBAs into the watery depths, but for the most part there is a fairly decent literacy rate east of Blue Hill Ave and west of the gas tank.
I, and nearly every single person I grew up with could read, write, breath, bathe ourselves, and tie our shoes at a reasonable age.
Your statement reeks, reeks to the heavens, on the assumption that you see yourself as better than others and believe it or not, you are one of the reasons that so many people rebelled (not me) and voted for The First Cheetoh yesterday.
You want to impose change on people that may need conversion to your way of thinking, haul your arse out to the mill towns of Worcester County or down to Cranberry Country. You can spread your enlightened way of thinking of the Trump Country of Massachusetts. I would keep the car running if I were you.

However, if you feel the need, check in with St. Mark's Rectory and see if one of the more diverse parts of the neighborhood (for now, pending rent increases in Cambridge and Somerville which will turn it more Barney), if people need help. Check in with the saintly Charmaine Higgins at Boston Strive in Codman Square. Check in at the Codman Square Health Center. The Codman Square, Adams, Fields Corner, and Lower Mills libraries may also be avenues for you to pursue.
Also, the Irish Pastoral Center at St. Brendan's caters to assisting immigrants (not just the bogtrotters).
My reaction before is that is one who still to this day is seen as some kind of lesser owing to where I was raised. It is hard to get over that and when people pontificate assuming you are less, you easily get the ire up.

I used to be an intern for their precursor organization Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses back in the 90s. I don't know much about their current state, but I'm sure they're doing good.

My local church is doing a Thanksgiving dinner give away. More info is in the link. I did it last year and it was great experience and a perfect way to connect with your local community. The Steppingstone Foundation is always looking for volunteer tutors and they're almost always hiring teachers, too. They're an education non-profit that helps underprivileged children in Boston access college. Their flagship program is based out of BLA during the school year.
