Hooters wins approval to bust out in Dedham

Wicked Local Dedham reports Dedham selectmen this week agreed to give Hooters a license so it can open the town's first breastaurant, on Providence Highway, where Bugaboo Creek and Summer Shack used to be.

Wicked Local reports selectmen didn't want to support the license, but felt they have little choice after the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission approved the chain's request for a license transfer.

That headline made me spit up my coffee. Good one.

Summer Shack closed?!

While I would prefer a Bugaboo Creek or Summer Shack to Hooters, I will say that the criticism of Hooters is a bit overblown and that the one meal I had there (shrimp with some buffaloesque sauce) was okay. No, not restaurant reviewer good, but Joe Schmo decent.

are going there for food.

I think most are there for the food. The food is ok, not good, not bad, but ok. I've only been twice, in LA. The boneless buffalo tenders are ok. Again, not good, not bad. It's not like a strip joint where the waitresses are giving lap dances. It's fast sit down food with a schtick. No more, no less.

I'm your prototypical white collar knowledge economy urban Bostonian -- the kind in SNL's "bubble" skit.

Me, my wife, and our two small kids go to Hooters in Saugus whenever we happen to have a rental car already and it's dinner time. We like the style of wings, and a pitcher of beer, and curly fries, and a bunch of sports on television, and an environment that actually isn't the sort of jock-head you get near North Station or Fenway Park.

And, we look around and see who's there. Lots of families coming back from a youth hockey game. Lots of guys who worked a late shift at a job site. Lots of mixed groups of young men and women who are going out to a place with cheap reliable eats, cold beer, and none of the bullshit that comes with lots of bars.

Yeah, tiny orange shorts and tight Ts is Hooters' schtick, and maybe it brings in first time customers. But the repeats? Yeah, they're not there for the tits.

In Florida, where Hooters originated, families do attend the location (I know this because my relatives do this). They even sell the wing sauce in local grocery stores down there. Yes the servers where tight shirts and shorts. But that's not unusual for Florida.

If Dedham can survive 30-plus years of umbrella drinks and reheated "Polynesian" cuisine at the Tahiti, there's nothing that Hooters can do to it.

You can't spell Dedham without double D's.

Wait....make that two reasons.

After your visit to Hooter's, just drive up the road a bit to the Amazing bookstore, conveniently located right behind the Tahiti. Dedham truly is a marvelous town.

Why do they even need to serve alcohol here? Are not the wings and sports enough for a good time?

Yeah, who would want to drink BEER and eat WINGS at the same time? Like tooth paste and orange juice, that.

How's their wine list?

The one here at UHub is better.

They make applebees wings taste good.

Seriously, why does this place have a reputation for wings?

They suck.

I always assumed it was so people could drink enough to forget about the inherently awkward situation that is a female wait person basically showing you enough of her skin and letting men be way more creepy than they would anywhere else for money...It's a strip club for prudes but at least strip clubs don't hide behind some veil of 'family friendly' or 'good wings'. also their bloodies taste like ketchup.

That creepy perv thing has to be learned somehow.

... but I vaguely recall that when Hooters wanted to open a place by North Station many years ago (and long gone), didn't they kind of fool everyone by using the name of the LLC rather than "Hooters" itself?

May, and I am only saying, may, have been run by The Legitimate Businessmen's Society of Boston. Went there once before a Bruins game, never to return.

At the far end of Friend(s?) Street, a long block from North Station.

I remember taking the T to North Station with a bunch of friends when I was, like, 12 to go to Hooters. We definitely went for the tits. And we definitely left happy.

Shout out to Laurie who gave 6 young perverts from Boston an afternoon to remember. I wonder where she is 20 years later? My guess is she's been demoted to the Springfield location.

Hopefully she has gone on to something better, but in any case I am guessing Hooters is the type of workplace that female employees age out of.

to the selectmen for having an open mind and approving Hooters.

Selectmen didn't support Hooters; they approved it only because they felt they had no choice.

The BRA is designed to support hooters.

I was in Carnegie Hall once, awaiting the beginning of a recital by an eminent pianist, and three blue-haired ladies in the row behind me, eminent socialites in their time, no doubt, were arguing about the best place in town to get wings. They debated the virtues of various places such as Olive Garden, TGIF, and so on, but one of them held out emphatically for Hooters. She seemed very sure of her position.

supposed to take away from the intended presentation of the Hooters brand? Regardless of the food quality (whether good or bad), it's overshadowed by the presentation of the establishment being one big c***-tease restaurant.

I don't need my food with a side of cleavage. What is that aspect suppose to contribute toward my overall experience? Am I supposed to happily pop a boner or think dirty thoughts of the servers?

The branding/presentation never made sense to me...if I want dinner out, I'll go to a restaurant & eat. If I wanted a cheap skin show, I'd visit a strip club. As a mid-30s guy, I don't get the concept.

If you go to a restaurant or bar and the servers (male or female) are attractive and friendly, it can add to the enjoyment of your time spent. If they are unattractive and surly it could detract from your enjoyment. That's the basic theory (which every place uses to some extent). Hooters just amps it up way to the point of absurdity.

The McWade Principle actually states that there is an inverse correlation between the attractiveness of the waitresses and the quality of the food. So in situations where you want a better meal just seek out less attractive waitresses. Is there a Hooters in Weymouth?

Some of us prefer going to Peggy O'Neils for some good old fashioned conversation...or to count how many racial slurs the group of Irish expats sitting next to you has said in the last hour.

Geez, you should have called the paddy wagon on those drunken harps and micks. They must have an air of superiorirty since they have never in history had any kind of discrimination against them. No Irish Need Apply such blatant racism.

Seriously, Adam, would you have allowed this kind of comment if it were "racial slurs the group of blacks/Hispanics/Muslims/Jews sitting next to you has said..."? I have a feeling you would have upbraided the commenter.

Do you know what an "Irish expat" is? Hint: It's not an insult - it refers to people from Ireland living in Dorchester, of which there are actually a fair number. I know language changes quickly these days, but I've yet to hear "expat" used as any sort of ethnic slur. Do they sit around exhanging slurs of their own while drinking Guiness, or whatever it is they drink, at Peggy O'Neil's? I have to admit, you've got me there - the only thing I know about Peggy O'Neil's is from reading press releases from the Attorney General's office (and to be fair to the bar, that was a 2014 settlement of a 2011 lawsuit).

My parents are from Ireland. What I didn't like was that it's implied that any Irish group/people will say racial slurs. My parents and all my extended family from Ireland are not like that and treat everyone with respect and have taught their children to also. My Irish expat friends are also respectful to other ethnic and racial groups. If that sentence implying (any other ethnic) group sitting next you always says racial slurs because, hey, it's what they do, I have a feeling you would not stand for that. Now, reading that post about the owner of Peggy O'Neil's - that person is just apparently an a-hole.
