First off, your 'statistic' is pulled out of your nethers, if you mean to imply that it refers to people who pursue art as a profession. Or perhaps you meant to include everyone who's ever picked up a crayon or hummed a tune?
But more to the point, equality doesn't have to refer to outcome (or income). Equality of opportunity is a valid goal for an educational organization like Emerson - indeed, for any American-based arts organization.
I was going to gripe about the sign, but then I thought that on the surface it is a good thing that the theatre is supportive of these things, and it's Christmas time, so good for them for liking respect, inclusivity, generosity, compassion and the like. Particularly respect has seemingly vanished over the years, so anyone who respects other people is doing a great thing.
A final solution for the homeless, drug addicts and mentally ill? 'Progressives' have quite a lot of sway in these parts, as do Democratic politicians who've controlled this state (the legislature) and city for more than half a century, you'd think this would be ample time to fix social problems like persistent homelessness, the social problems associated with substance abuse, mental illness, affordable, decent housing, etc. And I've been to and lived in large, medium and small cities similarly controlled by the Democrats and 'progressives' for more than half a century where problems persist and are in some places worse than here; yet all I've ever heard is how more $ is needed, more 'programs' are needed, etc.
Nope, I am not a Republican, neocon, or even hardcore conservative (I have some so-called conservative views and other so-called liberal views.) All my life living in large cities, and endless promises that if we just spend more $ on this or that, enact more 'programs', and all I've ever seen is more of the same old, same old.In this area, the #1 issue IMO is exorbitant housing costs, yet NOTHING is really done to improve the situation primarily because real estate interests make huge $ and control politicians, 'progressive' and the tiny few non-progressive, alike. Likewise, there's a very lucrative 'poverty pimp' industry, not to mention duplicitous unions in bed with the 'progressives' and big $ interests.
Cranky-pants goes on a rant vs progressives and liberals (wtf?) because they haven't fixed all the world's ills. I mean, being in charge for 50 years (sic) should be enough time for liberals to figure out how to completely end thousands of years of civilization's troubles, amirite?
And apparently has been around so briefly that she believes things are as bad as they ever were. (Speaking of...the 1970s called and would like to take you on a walking tour of the nation's big cities - bring your bullet-proof vest and a face-mask. Or heck, given the prospective new head of the EPA, just wait a few years I guess).

Great art is not about equality
1% of artists make work that is actually viable.
