Dorchester man with gun record arrested for chaos-causing gunfire at South Shore Plaza

Michael Spence

Braintree Police report arresting an armed career criminal for last night's gunfire that ended with SWAT teams roaming a locked down South Shore Plaza.

Michael J. Spence Jr., 23, is charged with shooting his gun after running into an enemy in the Macy's shoe department around 7 p.m., police say.

Police say that with the help of Boston Police investigators, they were able to track Spence to Quincy, where they arrested him early this morning. At the scene, police had said the gunfire - which injured no one but led to a mall lockdown - was the result of interaction between rival Boston gang members.

Spence was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building in use.

In 2014, Boston Police arrested Spence on a variety of gun charges in the Four Corners section of Dorchester. At the time, Spence, then 21, was already classified as "Armed Career Criminal Level 1," which meant he had been convicted of a violent crime.

Innocent, etc.

The media will have a field day with stories about gangstas from Dorchester but facts are facts he was a resident of Quincy when he was arrested.

But in this case, the Dorchester or Boston tie is still relevant because the police are blaming what the Globe called "an accidental run-in between members of two gang factions from Boston."

Let's blame Boston.

Specifically, let's place some blame on this great Commonwealth's gun laws and a lot of blame on Boston's handling of licensing gun owners.

Why, this poor chap could easily be a lawfully licensed gun owner if it weren't for the brutal series of steps through which the city puts prospective licensees. Am I right?

(Yes, belmont, some sarcasm here.)

This is his third illegitimate weapons charge in 5 years. He was out on probation for his second set of convictions. Seems like he got two slaps on the wrist for repeatedly committing multiple felonies just so he could be out and about to graduate to attempted murder.

Nice job judges! Keeping yourselves employed presiding over the same offenders in multiple trials.

Numbered 8 to the 14th power as being Most Gangster Place Ever, right behind the Holy Well near the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare and the local historical collection at the public library in Hubbardston MA.

Have fun with your Norfolk County jury my friend. They are known to be such an understanding lot when it comes to these matters.

Can you clarify the Norfolk county jury comment? Are they more or less leneient? Either way this guy has earned hard time I would say

I think what the Norfolk comment means is that he'll face a jury of people who are from leafy suburbs who are more likely to be disturbed by a gang member shooting at a rival than a jury in the city would be so are more likely to face a conviction.

Because black gangstas only buy shoes at Payless? Nice stereo you've got there - types very well.

Your racism glasses are really fogged up today. Better check that prescription.

Also, check your assumption, as I read it, that it is somehow ok, for people to open fire in a department store. Somehow your quick need to check someone over a perceived racist slight overarches the fact that this guy used bullets to try to settle a dispute.

it would be weird to START a dispute with bullets

Fantastic reference from a part of the world that I grew up in. And the local son who helped build that library also founded Clark University. Check it out world, there are interesting places west of 128 not named Vermont or New York City!

Watching Channel 7 last night you would've thought there was a terrorist attack at the mall. Just over the top, it's night time and it occurred indoors, no need for a news helicopter. Glad no one at the mall was assassinated.

And I say this without having watched their coverage (so I don't know how truly over the top they were), but you did have a mall that was put in lockdown, with SWAT teams from all over the place (even Boston) swarming the place, searching for a guy who'd just opened fire in the Macy's shoe department. That's kind of unusual in these parts.

...Local TV news has very little of substance to cover.

They really don't have alot goin' on these days.. so this was something exciting for them to fill up those 12 hours of newscast they have daily now.

I would say that just about any time the State Police send their helicopter to a scene (which they did), its probably serious enough for the news organizations to send their helos as well.

I wonder if you would think differently if your CHILD was there at the mall, tell me would the news coverage bother you so much? I was there a month ago with my daughter & granddaughter, I would WANT EVERYONE & THEIR MOTHER KNOWING!!! I also would've liked to kick him in the nuts when the cops were holding him & then spit in his face!! I have friends who had their kids there and the fear they felt was something that no parent should ever have to go thru!!
