Bread outlets in greater Boston
By anon on Sat, 02/04/2017 - 5:54pm
With the abrupt and unexpected closing last week of the Bimbo bread outlet at Wellington Circle, not to mention the closing of all Wonder Bread outlets several years ago, there is NOT ONE bread outlet in Greater Boston. Important questions arise. Why are all discount bread outlets closing? Where can consumers purchase discount bread. And most importantly, where are bakeries sending all their day-old bread? Hopefully not dumped in a landfill.

You ask too many questions.

Supply chain management has
Supply chain management has gotten to a point where companies try to keep track of how much they need rather than just guessing.
It explains why when you visit a small store and suddenly decide that you like a certain product and buy it daily you will notice it runs out and is not replaced for a while in many cases. The stores are not prepped to deal with out of the ordinary spending patterns.
It also means in the event of natural disasters and other things that will shut down roads our stores will run out of food faster than they did even 10 years ago. Just look at how quickly Market Baskets cleared out when their drivers went on strike.
Efficiency/resilience tradeoff
Exactly, this is a classic efficiency vs. resilience tradeoff. Competing goods: On the one hand less waste, on the other hand disasters get worse (as do minor interruptions).
RIP Quinzani's
Sigh.

Piantedosi's?
You might check out Piantedosi's outlet on Commercial St. in Malden. I've not been in there but hopefully it fits the bill.

Most Shaw's Markets have day
Most Shaw's Markets have day old bread in their reduced price sections, lots of stuff, bagels and all.
Commercial bakery
I've seen day-old bread reduced in price at a number of chain supermarkets, both the in-store baked, and the house brand versions of brand-name sliced bread.
I asked once why the other brands don't get marked down and I was told pretty much the same as the anon who posted above...most bakeries only deliver "just enough" to cover expected sales until the next scheduled delivery in order to minimize waste.
Anything unsold that is near to the "best buy" date is taken back by the bakery/distributor, and in some cases donated directly to area food banks. I volunteered at one particular food bank's distribution center one summer and there would occasionally be name-brand bread available for us to give out, though I can't remember now what brand it was.

Daily Table in Dorchester
Daily Table in Dorchester sells marked down bread. Siena Farms at Boston Public Market sells their day old Iggy's for 1/2 price.
Trader Joes and Whole Foods send their day old bread to food banks.
How does Trader Joe's have day-old bread?
I didn't think they baked anything themselves. The bread they sell has expiration dates on it about a week out.
