New owners of North Station sports bar would ditch sports, cater to area's new well heeled residents
The Boston Licensing Board tomorrow decides whether to allow the transformation of the North Star, 222 Friend St. into a calmer, quieter "professional" establishment aimed at the sort of people filling the new apartments sprouting like mushrooms around North Station, rather than rowdier Celtics and Bruins fans.
Timothy Bartolomeu and his business partners want to buy the current bar and turn it into the Rogue Lounge, which his lawyer said would provide "a more professional, calm lounge experience" that would mirror "the significant investments made in this part of the city of Boston. He added, however, that the new lounge would undergo only minor cosmetic changes before opening.
"The concept is a welcome change for the neighborhood," Maria Lanza, the mayor's liaison for the area, told the board.

"How dare they"
Celts/Bruins
The high ticket prices make the games affordable mostly to the 'well-heeled'...so this new bar would suit them well.
Somehow they find a way to pay
I'm always surprised at the crowd I see going to Bruins games. They don't typically look like people who have $100+ to spend on a ticket, plus all the necessary beer. The Bruins crowd is less likely to be "well-heeled" and more likely to be wearing work boots, jeans and a Cheevers jersey.
And that's exactly why I
And that's exactly why I still love going to Bruins games. I'll take real, working class hockey fans over an indifferent Celtics crowd any day. Much more fun than the people who got tickets from their office and talk about work while there happens to be a basketball game going on.
and that's exactly why i only
and that's exactly why i only go to bruins games if i am in a suite. no interested in being around a bunch of new Hampshire, trump voters...aka bruins fans.
Tarps off, boys...
Nothing screams "Trump voter" more than a bunch of fans cheering on a majority of Canadians, eh?
Trump voters have no idea
Trump voters have no idea what nationalities the players are...they are not exactly geography buffs.
anyway, how about the Habs..first place!
Audience demeanor
I'm not particularly a sports fan an and don't attend sporting events but for a long time now I have noticed the "new normal" behavior at concerts of people not (or barely) paying attention to the show, texting, showing up very late, constantly walking in and out while the performer is playing, etc. I guess I shouldn't be surprised this same behavior is also taking place at sporting events.
Oh yeah
I was at the Green Day show in Worcester last week. This drunk guy next to me, who talked loudly and used his phone incessantly, yells to his friend, "Hey this is the best part!" and then continues to have a loud conversation about some other bullshit. I've yelled at people before for that, but this guy was much bigger and drunker than I care to tangle with. (Instead I'll just post this Internet nastygram after the fact. So THERE!)
indifferent celtics crowd
how many celtics games do you go to in a season? i wouldnt call the celtics fans indifferent
maybe just the ones that 'havent been a fan since larry bird' because, well, we can only guess at their reasons. ill be kind and say that theyre shitty bandwagoners.
Interesting assessment.
Interesting assessment. Celtics tickets have been cheaper than Bruins tickets for years, even despite the Celtics getting better and the Bruins getting worse. C's games are hardly bastions of yuppiedom except against the most elite teams.
yea right
"indifferent" celtics fans. Whens the last time you went to one, 1995?
StubHub
Sometimes it's not a bad thing. For every overpriced, Saturday afternoon B's game against Philly, NY, or Montreal, you have a season full of weeknight games against teams like Arizona, Florida, NJ, and Carolina that tend to get sold for half of face value or less. Same with the C's.
I've also found that when one team's tickets are $$$, the other's can be had for much less. That last golden year of the Big 3 (4?) era, where the C's and Heat went to 7 in the Conference Finals, I went to a dozen or so games at an average price of $15 thanks to Stubhub and that Bruins cup run driving their tickets to $70+ for TRASH teams.
Some of those blue collar
Some of those blue collar jobs come with big paychecks. Especially if the family lives in NH and the job is near Boston... a guy with a truck, jeans and a carhart jacket could be racking in 100k. Not saying it is the norm but there are not that many seats in the garden and it is not the whole crowd.
In MASS especially, a lot of
In MASS especially, a lot of times the work booted blue collar types make more money than the so called yuppies though.
No kidding.
Was just at the Bruins/Flyers game on the 11th with 10 other guys for a bachelor party, and nosebleed seats were $141 each. And that was face value through a TD Garden ticket agent, not 3rd party.
One of the guys was a latecomer and scalped a ticket 2 sections over for $75. So the only deals to be had are 5 minutes before the game, in some back alley somewhere.
I know, I know... Philly games are one of the bigger draws, but still.
The Rogue Lounge?
Oh, yes, that sounds sedate, upscale, and sophisticated, compared to a sporty-dive name like North Star.

Bring back ........
The Midnight Court . Great place , not too many dudes , and not a hairy hog fest.
Keep Alston Shitty.
Will Chad and Muffy
patronize the "new" establishment on game nights?
Muffy?
I think we call them Becky now.
But I've literally never met a Muffy so I don't know what kind of cultural point you're trying to make.
Chad and Muffy?
They are much more likely to have Asian or East European names.
We'll see.....
I give this concept 3 months and then it's back to wet T-shirt contests.
Some of the worse
