Hyde Park's unique graffiti park

Larry Johnson spent some time recently at the Thompson Center, which some residents want to turn into a multi-use dog park, but which state Rep. Angelo Scaccia is fighting to keep it just the way it is.
Artists have complete freedom of expression here in billboard size pieces and are not fettered by the limitations put upon them by "community standards" or neighborhood associations who govern what can be put on public walls, or commercial concerns, or "acceptable" material teenagers can create on a mural project under adult supervision. This outdoor gallery is a unique museum of these creations, ever changing and challenging convention.

I'm all for spaces to be used
I'm all for spaces to be used for artists (and yes graffiti is art). This could be both. Space enough for dogs and also have walls for artists. Win-win.

Yes, I agree.
This is less art and more akin to highly stylized lettering, some of it good, some of it not. Personally, when I walk in the woods, I want to see woods and not spray paint.
Tagging is not art. It is vandalism.
Why?
Because of a local NIMBY that happens to have his ear.Hyde Park Neighborhood Association President Barbara Baxter.
Not sure what his ear costs,but the State Ethics Board may be able to put a price on some past indescretions. Long past time for him to be "out to pasture".
Dog park/grafitti
THE HYDE PARK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION HAS NEVER VOTED FOR OR SIGNED OFF ON THE THOMPSON DOG
PARK. THEY CAME TO OUR MEETING AND SHOWED US THE 3 ACRE DOG PARK. THEY CAME BACK TO US WANTING THE THOMPSON CENTER 9 ACRES.. WE DID NOT VOTE ON THIS
I , BARBARA BAXTER AND SEVERAL OTHERS WENT TO THE DOG PARK MEETINGS WITH THE DOG PARK AND DCR
STONY BROOK RESERVATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WONDERFUL DCR FACILITY .
JOHN ENNEKING THE FAMOUS ARTIST FROM HYDE PARK HAS PAINTED MANY PARTS OF STONY BROOK
RESERVATION AND THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED ENNEKING PARKWAY . HE ALSO PAINTED THE NEPONSET RIVER..

ART?
If graffiti is such great art why don't the artists decorate the exterior of their own house?
It can be done in broad daylight with no fear of interruption and serve as an advertisement for future commissions.

Yes, it is ART. It's become even more so since white folk have decided they LOVE IT and Banksy (who has ripped off a lot of other artists).
Seriously though do some research and you will find some amazing work. But the wonderful thing about art is that it's all subjective :) So what you may find beautiful I may not and vice versa.

Giant Robocop is still the
Giant Robocop is still the best thing I've spotted at the Thompson Center.
If I have to choose between turning the Thompson Center into a dog park and turning everything east of the Enneking/Turtle Pond parkway into a dog park, I'll take the former. But I'd prefer neither.
