I understand people love their pets, and that is good. No offense, I don't want your non-service animal on the train, in the supermarket, in a cafe or anywhere they are not supposed to be. You are rude and selfish if you bring your pet to place pets don't belong.

Because as we learned during the Penelope-the-snake incident, pets on the T are OK as long as they're under the owner's control, although during rush hours, they're supposed to be in "lap-sized" bags.

I realize that the "T" says it is "ok" however the T usually make piss poor decisions on a regular basis, and I think this is one of them. I'll make sure to bring my goat, chicken and parrot the next time I take the Red Line to JFK.

... of public backlash about 20 years ago when the T decided to actively enforce it's no pets policy. People were angry. For many people who can't afford to own cars and for whom a cab ride to the vet, this was a hardship. There was one story about an elderly couple who owed their lives to their dog who alerted them to a gas leak or a fire and who could no longer bring him for walks in the Arboretum. The Globe did a big story on it. The T revised the policy as a result.
Shortly after, I started bringing my dog on commuter rail and was welcomed with open arm by a conductor who said, "I wish all my passengers were as well behaved as the dogs that now ride the trains."
He had a point.
I'm going to add that when I bring a dog on the T it's great to see the smiles on people's faces. They often want to pet them and conversations start up. Riding the T can be stressful. We need more therapy dogs on the T.

But I know some people with serious allergies. A cat in the open, especially a longhaired one, is likely to spread dander around at a fairly quick pace.
While I'd be charmed by the kitty, some other folks might not be able to breath too well after exposure.

... on the T also and she's not thrilled by it either. I stopped using a hard sided carrier and switched to a soft carrier. That way I can keep her close to my body and slide my hand inside to sooth her. It really helps keep her stress level down.

My cat hates the carrier, period. Never took him on the T.. he'd just cry and cry and annoy other passengers.
But I did find what works the best (for him) is... I have a blanket I keep on a radiator cover in front of a window. Both my cats get up there and look out the window. When it's vet time, the blanket goes into the carrier with him, and not a peep outta him.
Last time, my cat fell asleep on the way over. And we went to the Vet, and after the Vet was done and I was in the exam room alone with him. he climbed off the table and right back into the cat carrier. Happier than a clam. I never had him willingly go back into the carrier by himself. The blanket worked apparently.

Something with their scent or even the owner's will help calm them.
One thing we've found is that one of our cats hates his carrier but it has roll up sides. It helps a little if he can see out. He just cries. If he can't see anything he goes crazy.

The secret is not to use it only when taking him to the vet, but to make it available to explore and enjoy at his convenience. Henry loves to curl up and sleep in his carrier, so he feels cozy and safe inside it.
When he stops showing much interest in the carrier, I'll put it away for a while. Then, when I bring it out again, he'll eagerly go right in as soon as I open the door. After doing this off-and-on regularly, now the carrier is a special treat instead of something to fear.

We'll give it a try.
We used to store the carriers up high. The fire alarm went off one night and we realized that's a bad idea if you need them quickly. Fortunately a false alarm and now they stay within easy reach.

People have severe allergies to pollen as well... shall we destroy nature to accommodate them? Take your allergy medicine and be an adult like the rest of us. Having a cat allergy is not life-threatening. The two or three times in your life that you might encounter someone transporting their cat to an animal hospital on the T is not going to in anyway impact you for the rest of your life. Please try to put inconveniences into perspective.
