This might be a problem on a seawall during a nor'easter

The Herald gets ahold of some glorious memos from a WCVB news exec ordering reporters doing outdoor liveshots to always be walking while they're talking - even if that means walking from "nowhere to nowhere."

Guess Ch 5 never saw this video before
Alas, not a real reporter (probably a real pole, though)
Was part of an ad campaign.
This one might be real. But why is there a mirror image?
Copyright?
The first clip is the mirrored one, probably to avoid being detected for copyright infringement.
The Herald Calling Out Sensationalism?
Pot calling the kettle black to the 10th power there former One Wingo Wayers.
That being said, most live shots are idiotic. Is there any need to stand out in front of a suburban town hall for the 11:00 news for a story on a puppy getting hit by a car that wrapped up at 1:00 in the afternoon?
I drove through Sullivan Square late Monday Morning. 4 trucks surrounding the baseball field to do a live shot on a story that happened on Sunday. You couldn't use the Sunday feed and maybe work on something else?
Where the hell are Jack Henning and Janet (5) Wu when you need them to do a State House or City Hall take down? I weep for the future of local tv news.
We're going live now..
Agreed, there's no need to say "We're going live now to Bob in front of the Cambridge Courthouse" and then show us Bob standing in the dark at 8pm telling us about a verdict that happened IN the courthouse 8 hours earlier. It looks ridiculous-- Just give the news from the anchor desk!
But I guess in News-speak, "Live" means "we'll tell you in real time about something that happened days ago in this location" (and sometimes not even in real time, as I see the same clip of Bob in the dark looping every hour), and "Breaking" means something relatively new which is probably of no consequence.
Actually, "Breaking News" means
something we haven't reported on yet.
The disclaimer I really dislike is "Exclusive" - which usually means either "Something that isn't newsworthy enough for the other stations to cover" or "Something so we can milk this days old dead story even more."
OSHA
OSHA rules apply to media outlets and their "contractors".
Turn the Paige wants bimbo's and
sensationalism. "Breaking News" its raining....
The original memo misses the
The original memo misses the larger point, which is Why are they doing this as an outdoor shot at all? If you're at the point of telling your reporters to walk back and forth in front of City Hall, or near the ocean, instead of standing still in the same place, maybe they should be back in the studio. A video of a tornado touching down would be noteworthy; seeing a reporter get rained on isn't.
The person reporting on a nor'easter isn't getting the actual news by looking at the ocean or the seagulls, they're getting it from someplace like the National Weather Service, which is using satellites and computers. And there's no reason to report on a politician's latest announcement from the statehouse steps unless they're giving a press conference there.
Classic Example: JFK Jr. Crash
They kept going back live to Victoria Block at some waterfront location saying "they still haven't found the plane".
Several days of this, for an hour at a time.
If she was walking it still would have been the same - pathetic, useless, pointless "coverage" of nothing.
and also...
How many times during the past few years' major trials (Bulger, Hernandez, Mazzaglia, etc.) do we get a reporter standing outside the courthouse explaining that: the jury is still deliberating... the judge is considering a defense motion... the sun rose in the east this morning... nothing is happening, but Channel X is standing right here in front of nothing happening to prove we're on the ball.
Sadly, John Henning died in 2010
Sadly, John Henning died of leukemia in 2010 but I agree that he'd be a vast improvement, even in his current state. I find ch. 5 very annoying with Ed Harding, Maria Stephanos and Mike Lynch trying to outdo each other with the idle banter, failed humor and know-it-all comments. Ch. 4 has gotten better with David Wade and Lisa Hughes, although someone named Ken McLeod can't mention President Trump without pausing to shake his head and frown. Ch. 7 and ch. 25 are OK for a quick hit but there's very little enterprise reporting, just regurgitating City Hall and State House press releases. I learned more about the Aaron Hernandez alleged suicide from the UK media than from anything local, including the papers.
don't like competition?
Harding is awful
Nothing more to say than Harding is so damn fake...drives me crazy!
Sponsorship Opportunities
Dunkins can pay them to be holding a plastic-in-styrofoam cup and constantly running.
Brought this to mind...
If the subject is reporters being required to
constantly move while doing live shots, perhaps this sketch is more appropriate:
No it isn't. Yes it is.
..and so forth.
You sound like
The Man Who Contradicts People.
You can't make an argument using contradictions
"Yes I can"
"No you can't"
(yes that's whom I was referring to)
