Outdoor pot smoking: It's just like the weather
By adamg on Thu, 05/11/2017 - 8:26am
The Bulletin reports on a meeting of residents along Clare Avenue in Hyde Park at which one complained about her neighbors constantly toking up since voters legalized recreational marijuana use:
"I want to nip this in the bud," she said. "Everyone’s talking, but no one is doing anything."

Is there any effort to put a repeal measure on the ballot like was done with the bathroom bill?

I'd gladly vote to ban smoking of pot but continue to allow the dozens of others ways to use the plant.
I couldn't care less if people use pot but the smoke is really nauseating. I find it far worse then cigarettes since it lingers and spreads further.
Okay, but I find cigarette
Okay, but I find cigarette smoke to be much, much worse than pot smoke. So in my view, ban both kinds or neither. There's no need to single out pot smokers just because they only recently got legalized.
The smell of car exhaust
The smell of car exhaust fumes is nauseating to me, much like the smell of pot smoke is to you. Lets get a bill up to ban automobiles
Umm, OK
I love European cities where large parts of the city center are closed to cars.
What about European cities
What about European cities that allow people to smoke weed outside in public?
Budding controversy
I think Anonymous Resident is a performance artist, and has been toking up a bit. "Nip this in the bud" is the giveaway.

Did they hand out free sample EBT cards too? What noble giving men! Their spirit of sacrifice is truly up there with the memories of the Kennedys.
Anyhoo... I have lived next door to a major heroin dealer for over ten years and when anyone asks how I put up with it, I say that I am thankful that I do not have to put up with the smell of pot or lame ass rap songs from customers cars.
Just shut your pie hole already
You don't even live here, the free fares are paid for with PRIVATE money, and nobody gives a shit what sort of racist spew you will dribble out next.
Looks like 3 people like his
Looks like 3 people like his spew. BTW how's the heroin thing going?
Actually, the free fares are paid for with a person's
CAMPAIGN funds, which is NOT the same as private money. If a politician is not going to spend the funds on campaign expenses, they should be returned to the donors.
Nope
Already has been looked at, and it is deemed a legal/OK usage of campaign funds. Better luck next time, though.
Did you donate to the campaign?
If so, ask for your money back. If not, STFU.

Now that Trump is president it's okay to say that you're glad his customers are white.
I am not that good at being racist.
My neighborhood population is well over half black.
-- Now that Trump is president it's okay to say that you're glad his customers are white. --
I don't care what color the customers are as long as they do not stink up the street with pot smoke or play any rap music other than old school.
OOOOOOHHHHHHHH the I'm not
OOOOOOHHHHHHHH the I'm not racist I live by them argument it's an old one but a tried and true method of white guilt for hating people of different origin or skin color. Hey when you said old school rap were you actually referencing minstrel shows?
NOPE
Beastie Boys...

A racist with white guilt = Hillary voting leftist (Fauxahontas in the next election).

Fascinating racialist retort
Fascinating racialist retort to the I'm not racist argument. You're either a very bad troll or you love digging yourself into a hole. I'm going to stop you before you say something about digging all the way to China in a stereotypical accent and ending with you saying "I'm not racist I order Chinese food."

You are WAY...
... too modest.
Oh, don't sell yourself short
You opened with a modified "but some of my friends are black," only it was an even dumber rendition because you forgot to imply that you actually interact with anyone in your neighborhood. I'd say you're doing a bang-up job being racist.
I do not interact with them

Most of them are HEROIN dealers.
Think before you type.

It's points like these that really make you wish Howie Carr will hurry up and die already. But that's a little hard to wish cause it will never come true. His life line is all connected to Whitey Bulger due to some book deal he made with the devil.
I got a BINGO
Off topic trolling post, smearing poor people, rap music, drugs, attacking people who spend their money to help other people
No worse than cigs
In my experience non-smokers are generally cooler with the smell of weed than they are cigarettes.
Disagree
It's much worse. Causes headaches and even nausea for some people who can't escape it when it's indoors. It seems to linger in the air for longer outside so it's even more annoying than tobacco.
We smell it everywhere in Back Bay now, especially coming from cars stopping for traffic lights. They sometimes take a while to start moving again . . . . . .
Your opinion
Which is fine, we obviously have had different experiences. And indoors is totally different than outdoors, but even then the chemicals in ciggs stink more in my opinion. One thing I can unequivocally say though is cigarette smoke lingers a lot longer than weed. You can smell ciggs on the walls and everything.
Cigarettes are far worse
I am not a cigarette smoker or pot smoker and I have to agree the smell of cigarettes is far worse, far more offensive, sick-making and lingering than the smell of pot.
Correct
there is a reason many pot-heads will also smoke a cig after toking. To cover the smell up. Worked when I was in college anyways.
Cig smoke is much, much worse. I can smoke a joint in my car and 24 hours later you don't smell it ( at least I don't). Cigs however, hit you in the face as soon as you open a car door. Weed will do the same if it is merely IN the car, whereas cigs do not do that. They each have their pitfalls. Bottom line is, people who don't like the smell outside can pound sand. I don't like the smell of natural gas that emanates from the middle of Nonantum road. No one's doing anything about that. I don't like the smell of the recycling plant in Charlestown where I work in summer, they just built a huge low-income housing facility here, must be nice. I don't like the smell of sewerage and sausage carts in NYC, nothing being done there either.
DEAL WITH IT YOU SOFT, CODDLED MF-ers!

An antienemic is causing nausea? They must've gotten a bad batch.
Most non-pot/cig smokers i've
Most non-pot/cig smokers i've discussed this with prefer the smell of weed over cigs...
weed smell goes away pretty quickly
unless you have a stinky bag sitting somewhere unsealed weed is the lesser of two stinks. cigarette smoke stays around in the furniture and everything else forever. you can always tell a room that someone has been smoking cigs in even when the smoker is not home. smoke a joint and that room smells clear 10 minutes later. my mother never had a clue.
Not outdoors
I swear, when I'm walking around (which I do a lot) I get suddenly get the smell of weed at certain points, and no one is around. Pot might beat tobacco indoors, but somehow it lingers outdoors. Who know, perhaps it's because people tend to stay still when toking the weed, but it's my experience. I also was getting the occasional wafting of marijuana by my house, and we are not exactly up against our neighbors.
Also, since marijuana is supposed to be treated like alcohol (per the name of the group that got it legalized) smoking in a public way or in a car would be as illegal as drinking in the same places. While tobacco might not be safe for second hand exposure, the point of reference is alcohol.
Outside?
Re; outdoor pot smoking, who cares????
I mean this article has a series of complaints from the residents:
- outdoor pot smoking (in their yard)
- outdoor pot smoking (on the sidewalk)
- foul language - "we shouldn't have to deal with it."
- reckless driving
- dumping snow in the street.
This sounds like a meeting of the "Get Off My Lawn Association", who arrived with their (short) list of all of the things that have been burning them up for the past 6 months.
My God.
Sounds like a bunch of crab apples
I realize change is tough for some but let us get real. If the person is smoking a joint in his or her yard, they can do that legally now, as the police informed them. Folks swearing? As the police informed the group, there is nothing they can do about that as it is not a crime. Dangerous car drivers? Join the club. I live on a street where, on parts, the 25 mile per hour speed limit is only a suggestion.
Instead of whining, call 9-1-1 if someone is using your street as a drag racing venue. It is easy, just pick up your phone, like I have, and dial the three numbers.
i really really reaaalllllyyy
dont like noises & smells
pot smoking is an indicator of age :)
I've been growing indoors legally since Dec 15th and am just finishing up the carpentry work on a 2nd enclosure so I can have a clone/propagation and veg box on one light schedule while the 2nd enclosure runs a 12:12 cycle for bloom/flower stage. I've also incorporated a new MA company with an eye for a specific market niche come 2018 or beyond when it becomes legal to sell services to other homegrowers.
What I've observed via my own usage and other observation ...
What this all adds up to is that smoking weed and creating all that unwanted smell is starting to really die out.
The kids hate the concept and hate the idea of burning/smoking stuff. The smells produced by vaping weed are far less noxious and the smell from atomizing waxes or concentrates is even less noticeable. And edibles produce no smell at all.
But the smell of smoking the traditional way is still damn strong and the social act of passing a joint around a bunch of people outside or in a car is unlikely to ever go away. I just think it's going to be only 5% of how weed is actually used in MA over time, especially when rec becomes fully legal
Hard pass
No pun intended. But all that new-age stuff sounds like a precursor to companies (and people) adding chemicals and next thing you know bam, weed causes cancer just like cancer sticks. I don't smoke though ;)
BTW - I went to visit a friend who works at Blue Apron and he said he vapes weed at his desk, at work, and no one is the wiser.
some could be safer ...
There are a bunch of risks that I'm worried about; the recent test results showing pesticides in weed are pretty concerning and there is growing evidence that extractors using closed-loop systems with solvents can inadvertently contaminate their product with super concentrated pesticide levels if they recycle their solvents and then do a crap job of purging their end product -- or they purge the volatile solvent while leaving the poison behind which is worse.
I'm a HUGE fan of analytical lab testing and just setup an account with ProVerde Labs in MA so I can send my own stuff out for testing. The other reason I like the homegrow movement is that it sidesteps the stuff you mentioned -- companies adding crap to the product. There is a very specific example here that freaks me out -- many e-cig cart people are using propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine as the liquid that they mix the concentrates in. Even though PG and VG are used in food production I'm gonna take hard pass on carts and e-cigs until there is a good body of research on the effects of burning/inhaling VG and PG vapors.
Ok back on topic .. if you are interested in this topic I can't stress how cool "rosin tech" is -- it literally uses nothing more than heat and pressure to extract concentrates from weed. The end product is a flavorful (terpenes preserved) waxy substance produced without solvents or other chemicals that you can either vape or cook with. The chemistry nerds can take this stuff and dewax/winterize it and end up with almost pure crystalized THC or CBD.
The other safer methods for making concentrates would be quick washing in super cold ISO alcohol and then letting the alcohol evaporate off. The ISO pulls the concentrate out of the plant and evaporates off leaving you with concentrate that you can use or cook with. And finally there is the old scool bubble bag hash method that uses nothing more than ice water and a series of increasingly fine mesh filters.
Anyway don't want to promote anything or alter your "hard pass" take but I want to argue back that if you are concerned about that stuff than homegrowing your own stuff + concentrating it with rosin tech is the way to go!
Interesting stuff
Honestly most of what you're saying is going over my head but I'll check out this rosin tech thing because it sounds interesting. Thanks
It already is by nature.
as the poster you are responding noted, there ARE non-chemical ways to make these extracts, but by far the most popular way to make oil/wax/shatter/whatever is to run BUTANE over compacted flowers in a variety of ways. THE BEST results from this method will leave between 3-5% butane all over what you're smoking. It can be much worse when hillbilly hacks do it.
have fun with that.
I'll take mine through a water pipe, tried and true.
Or, you know...
You can just pass the dutchy 'pon the left side lol.
PS - someone told me years ago it was legal to smoke weed (and carry guns) in Boston Common because of the blue laws. Never believed it, but always wondered if it were true.
Except the under the age of 30 ...
..that I know. Quite a few that I work with come to work with the same coat that they wear when they smoke outside. Their coat just reeks. Once their coat is off, you can't smell the weed on them. They probably smoked outside the night before while wearing that coat.
I've told a bunch to get a coat that is only for when they go to work or learn to bake brownies!
You've "told them"?
You're the office environment police, then? Do you tell the people who drench themselves with perfume and cologne to wear plastic bags? How about the lunchtime gymrats who don't bother to shower? You must be very busy.
Although perfume and sweat
Although perfume and sweat can be overwhelming at times smelling strongly of weed is not a good look in the workplace. It raises suspicion that the person could be under the influence of drugs while on the job. Too much perfume or body odor is just gross.
Really?
Tell this to my hash-smoking 20-something neighbors, whose daily habit starts in the morning and fills the common areas and sometimes our condo with their rank, weedy exhalations. I have asthma, and just getting in and out of my place is often hard since fumes are a trigger.
They say they have a legal right to do as they please, etc., and yes, we'd need 100% agreement to become a non-smoking building. Their daddies pay their bills; they don't work. Daddy also pays lawyers to threaten us if we complain.
One day last year, they emptied their bong into the wastebasket and drove off (they routinely drive stoned). The wastebasket ignited and we called the fire dept. The firefighters broke down their door and saved the building. If we hadn't just come home and heard their smoke detector, or if it hadn't worked, we might have lost everything, including our pets. I'm always grateful now to come home to a building that isn't a burned-out shell.
I wish we could move but we can't. Please keep spreading the word about the glories of edibles and anything else people can use without stinking up others' homes or threatening other's safety and property. I don't care what people do as long as it doesn't affect me in serious ways.
Secondhand smoke.
Cigarette and cigar smoke is much more prevalent and much more toxic than marijuana smoke. Tobacco and marijuana users don't have to smoke to get their fix. They have other, less anti-social options. Marijuana smoke doesn't bother me even though I don't smoke it myself, but I think that no one should be subjected to either unless they consent to it.
Tobacco and marijuana smoke should be banned in public spaces, inside and out. It is in more and more public places in response to citizen's complaints. The problem is smoking bans are posted but not always enforced.
I agree with you. I have no
I agree with you. I have no problem with pot smokers but there is a time and place to do drugs. I'm not uptight at all but I must admit that it makes me very uncomfortable to have my 5 year old nephew running through weed smoke at the park.
what bothers you
do you feel the same if its a campfire?
or people having a drink at a barbecue?
I actually meant to say
I actually meant to say playground. I think what bothers me is that it is a space for children to play without being around adult habits like cigarettes, booze and weed.
Ironically, again in my
Ironically, again in my experience, when walking with friends, coworkers, whomever else...when they smell cigarettes you get the traditional upturned nose and disgusted look and people walking around the offender. For some reason when we pass the smell of weed everyone just raises their head/neck and says 'I wonder where that's coming from.'
Couldn't there be a compromise?
I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, so I'm biased in that I hate it more. Marijuana has never bothered me. Instead of an outright ban in public places, I can see marijuana being acceptable in a hookah bar or some other public spaces even if segregated out. And yes, both should be banned in children's playgrounds and parks.
I don't understand the logic of asking for an outright marijuana ban but not a cigarette ban (which, IMO is much worse).
outdoor weed smoking question? concerts......
how will this be handled in situations such as concerts and football tailgaiting? can i sit on the back of my trunk and burn one at xfinity center before the Train concert or what? I get that I cant smoke inside the venue but what about the parking lots? how will they handle the upcoming dead shows?
from a rules viewpoint it's like smoking tobacco ...
Been a while since I read the specific text but the idea/intent is to treat outdoor weed smoking the same way that outdoor tobacco smoking is handled. Basically if you can smoke a cigarette and are a legal adult then you should be able to smoke marijuana in that same location. If there is a "no smoking" sign or if you are on private/public property where smoking is prohibited than weed smoking would also be a no-no.
At a tailgate or concert situation you would pretty much have to do what the property owner posts.
That is why at concerts you see people with e-cigs. They can claim it as a harmless vape pen loaded with something legal and unless you bust it open and test the liquid within you won't really be able to tell that it was actually loaded up with a THC concentrate oil.
i don't believe this is correct.
smoking marijuana in public is still illegal in massachusetts. you may not, for example, walk down a public sidewalk and smoke weed, even though you would be able to smoke a cigarette. i am not saying that you are actually likely to get busted for this, but the new marijuana regulations are actually stricter than the smoking regulations.
The value of edibles
The situation will be much better when purchasing is legal and we can munch brownies instead.
Snort!
Pot smokers are just as inconsiderate as Cigarette Smokers, though probably drunker. Both are Equally Tiresome, nowadays.
