Police: Burglars smash into Lower Mills restaurant, steal safe, are stopped in Hyde Park forest
Boston Police report arresting one of the three men they say used a sledgehammer and crow bar to smash their way into Ester, 2261 Dorchester Ave. in Dorchester Lower Mills early Sunday.
Police say that after breaking in around 5:30 a.m., the three, all clad in hoodies, dragged "a large safe" out. The burglary was captured on video and police dispatchers sent out a BOLO.
At approximately 7:15 AM that same morning, an off-duty Boston Police officer on his way to work observed three males and two cars parked on the side of road near a marshy area on Enneking/Turtle Pond Parkway in [Stony Brook Reservation] in Hyde Park. One of the males appeared to be a “lookout” while the two other males struggled with a large object in the backseat of the vehicle parked close to the marshy waters. Based on the officer’s training and experience, as well as his knowledge of the area, the officer broadcast his location and observations and turned his vehicle around to further investigate. When the officer approached in full uniform, two of the males fled in a black vehicle while the third attempted to flee in the white vehicle with the large object in the backseat. The officer was able to block the white car from leaving, and as additional officers arrived, they apprehended the male without further incident.
Inside the white car, police say, officers found the safe and the "burglarious" tools used to break into the restaurant. Raheem Rivera, 18, of Dorchester, was charged with receiving stolen property, breaking and entering in the nighttime and, of course, possession of burglarious tools. The hunt continues for his alleged accomplices, police say.
Innocent, etc.

I'm not sure
I'm not sure I agree with you 100% on your police work there, Lou.
Nice job by the off-duty BPD officer identifying the situation and calling in for backup, and then blocking in one of the culprits with his vehicle. Given the time of day, it may have made more sense to wait for backup to arrive and block the road in both directions to catch the other two. It didn't sound like they were planning on going anywhere real quick as they struggled with the safe.
Of course I'm armchair quarterbacking a little here. Mostly an opportunity to drop the Fargo quote.
Everyone's a critic
This arrest of a likely thief, and retrieval of the stolen safe, sounds like a big win to me.
Well ...
The location is, literally, in the middle of a forest (BPD doesn't specify where, but based on the mention of "marshes," I suspect it's on the stretch coming up from Gordon Avenue in Hyde Park). It's not like a city street where you can just pull into a parking spot and not be noticed - especially not at that hour of the day, especially since there are few places to park and especially not since one of the three was on lookout duty.
It seemed like
The cop went by unnoticed, and was only noticed when he got out of the vehicle and approached them. Seems like a pretty dumb lookout who didn't see that the passing driver was wearing a full police uniform. Yes, re higher poster, success overall, minor issue of the other two guys still running amok. Hopefully the guy they have sings.
Did he have a cel phone?
If so, the cops should have no problem getting a warrant for that morning's communications. He may not have to sing at all.
BOLO

Do not bother buying a safe
Do not bother buying a safe if you do not plan on bolting it to the floor.
It may have been bolted to the floor
Hence the "burglarious tools" required to extract it.
Love these stories
Cops take a lot of grief in society, Some they definitely don't deserve, and some they probably do.
But I love stories like this. Hat-tip to the off-duty officer catching the bad guy!
And also, thanks to Adam for covering local news like this.
I live down the street -
I live down the street - Ester is a great restaurant and the owner is a real sweetheart. Just real, nice people. Maybe take a little trip there next time you want dinner. Check out something new, and give them a little boost of business.
