The landlord had a lot to say, but looks like the editors have removed them all.
Sister Francis Didn't Worry About Bombs
When I was in high school, I loved to run the switchboard. One day when I answered an incoming call, the caller said there was a bomb in the school.
I immediately told Sister Francis, who was the nun in charge of the school office. She sighed and said, "Oh Elmer, if we paid any attention to those calls, they'd be closing the school every day!"
Yes, I've recounted that story before, but honestly, when real bombs go off, how often does someone announce it ahead of time? Similarly, how often do "bomb threats" foretell an actual danger?
Is responding to such threats by taking them literally; evacuating people out of what is more likely the safest place; playing right into the hands of malevolence?
But in Sister Francis's day
if you ignored a bomb threat and the school actually exploded, you wouldn't have legions of lawyers suing the parish afterward. These days, it would be more like "And this week's second collection, as with the second collections we've had the past 2,487 weeks, is for our friends at Dewey, Cheatem and Howe."
And that dear friends is the crux of 99% of security theater. Not the fear of something happening, but the fear of lawsuits in the unlikely event of something happening.
Not true
People used to sue in the good old days when everyone knew their place, etc.
Sister FRANCIS was ahead of her time
When the name is spelled like that it reminds me of my old radio:
Trans-sister!
traditional spelling would have been Frances, as in "Bread and Jam for Frances."
Real Bombs
Have any called-in bomb threat in the US in the past 50 years actually resulted in the police finding the alleged bomb?
