Boston chef on St. Martin, is OK

Kerry Byrne reports that local chef Brian Poe was on St. Martin when Irma hit, but that he has managed to check in and is OK.

from photo's of Princess Juliana International Airport getting home might be an adventure.

In all the SXM photos showing submerged cars next to boats, I'm wondering why the car owners didn't drive their car up a mountain road over the weekend and park it there. Of course you don't want to park near the shore when a hurricane's coming. Plus, why were there any airplanes still at the airport? Just gas them up and fly them away.

That's like a multiple hour EF3 tornado.

How would someone "fly away" without becoming another Bermuda Triangle victim? Not all planes have enough range to get to other places not affected by the hurricane in a fast enough time frame. I'm sure the widebodies did that, but small planes? Their owners might not even have been around.

As for taking the car to the mountains, good luck finding it. This type of storm removes trees and vegetation. Also, would you bike back down to shelter after?

TL/DR: easy to second guess, but the people who live on these islands generally know what they are doing. A high end Category 5 hurricane pretty much destroys everything, one way or another.

In Sint Maarten you're never more than a couple miles from higher ground, and in the Antilles you can usually see the next island with the naked eye. With days of warning, it's not hard to plan.

With 125-185 mph winds for several hours. It just makes for dry demolition, possibly fires when your car topples over and over.

There's a smaller airport, L'Esperance, on the French side.
