In addition to the linked blog entry, I recommend scrolling down to read the Sept 20 "Questions Remain" entry for a more detailed account of the printing/delivery disaster. I came away from this (as well as the "Beat the Press" segment referenced in the article) believing that the failure of the Globe is more probability than possibility.
Who cares if the print edition fails, when they have an established digital platform? Unfortunately it turns out that ad revenue from the print edition is the more significant revenue source, that the Globe as an entity probably can't exist without it.
The one glimmer of hope seems to be that money from the sale of the old real estate could buy time to figure things out. Best of Luck, Mr. Mehra.
The Globe deserves to fail and I say that with several friends who are pressmen, mailers and truck drivers. I feel bad for the "good guys" that have dedicated their lives to the paper only to be humiliated by the writers and management. I thought Lisa Pizzutti was going to fix it?
Regardless of your politics, what kind of business model that is supposed to "play it straight" would dedicate an entire fake front page trying to sabotage a Presidential candidate who earned well over a million votes in the circulation area, more if you add the other New England states? I'm well aware of the difference between news and opinion at a paper but spare me.
Like all politicians, President Trump can be easily criticized on facts (by opinion writers) but to make fake, dire predictions, none of which came true is simply silly and not worth a subscription. I believe there are one or two D-List columnists who are assigned just to trash Trump. I can't say for sure because I don't get beyond the pay wall. Sad. A shadow of its former self.
It seems to me that the most successful brands are apolitical. We can see the PR disasters in Hollywood, the NFL, Kellogg's and the Globe when politics get involved. Keep blaming the internet and a failed new printing plant for the Globe's problems. Great strategy! Let me know where I can buy some stock.
...it's not what I thought it was.
I haven't read it or logged on for years now.
I have been disillusioned beyond anything I could have imagined and won't get into it.
Swirly?
Incredibly pompous presumptious opinion.
Every newspaper has suffered the same fate. The globe is doing better then many others.
We get that you take personal offense to any criticism of your hero Trump. BTW, have you renounced the Sox since the Globe is entirely John Henry's pet?
I read both papers. One thing that stands out for me is that auto dealers still buy ads from the Herald. Lots of column inches or whatever (they buy entire pages in the sports pages). The same companies buy on Sundays if that. As Dan Kennedy notes, that’s the main way newspapers still pay the bills. If clicks lead to cash, Adam would have a staff to report on stories.
I would love to see the sports section of the globe as a self supporting stand alone. I have no interest in it but the paper seem to spend a lot of resources on it and when I specifically page through to see who is advertising, there are mainly house ads for other related products. Who is paying for all that sports coverage?
Being an Avalanche fan, I was dying to read about their performance against the local team this week. I will admit that with the 9:30 faceoff, next day reporting of the Denver game would have been tough (even though they did it in the past) they never ran a game report or did much in the way of talk of the game. The Herald, on the other hand, did have the usual reporting.
I hate to admit it, but the Globe is positioning itself well for national reporting, but the day to day coverage is getting worse and worse.
The last time I actually paid for a Red Sox ticket was Game 6 of the 2013 World Series. That was about witnessing history. Politics aside, I don't think it was wise for Henry and Theo Epstein to come out for John Kerry. After years of owning the team, Henry's "horror" about playing on "racist" Yawkey Way is too incredible to be believed. He's just getting around to this now?
The Greek immigrants who own my favorite pizza shop know better than to get political but when you have billions, I guess it doesn't matter. In direct answer to your question, my friends get angry at me when I turn down a free ticket to the Sox. Little interest. The luster has worn off, as we've seen by the empty seats and the Sox finally declaring an end to the fake "sellout streak." As a coverup, the Red Sox allow season ticket holders to "donate" tickets that nobody wants to veterans and homeless who wait outside, which is nice but hides the lack of interest in the team.
My disappointment with The Globe has to do with journalistic integrity.
Unbiased reporting.
You know, like I was taught in school about the craft?
What readers would expect when reading newspaper reports?
And by the way, I am a Bostonian through and through, thank you very much.
Again this morning the epaper is from yesterday and no Sunday Paper has posted. Sometimes the links work, sometimes they link to the wrong story. Some days all sections list, some days only a few.
Do you at least get free access via the website? It looks like all the Sunday content is posted-the magazine, etc. I know it's not the same experience, and as has been previously discussed here on UHub it is still possible to override the "2 article limit" paywall on the website. But if you've had enough of paying for crap service......

No Herald Home Delivery Today
Got the Globe, if the pattern holds the Saturday Herald will come along with the Sunday edition.

They might all be going to their graves
But the Globe is making an effort to dig theirs.

No ads in the Globe sports

And the concern for the sports page shows

John Henry does have some employees with time on their hands.
I bet BoSox pitchers could hit the doorstep more often than the bushes and a few may even have CDL licenses.
