This is a waste of money

Isn't it already four lanes during rush hours, because the breakdown lanes are used as travel lanes? If it's still congested at other times, then consider extending the time that people can travel in the breakdown lanes. That won't cost anything and won't have any environmental impact.
Breakdown-lane traffic is an accident waiting to happen

Try getting off that stretch of 128 at rush hour sometime.
I'm not arguing that's the best reason to expand the road, but as somebody who takes the Great Plain Avenue exit during rush hour, I will be most glad when the breakdown lanes return to their original purpose as breakdown lanes instead of being used as personal autobahns by people who need to get to Braintree 10 seconds faster.
Not just waiting to happen

I was in an accident caused by these. Well, it was caused by the driver who was in the stopped breakdown lane, pulling out into me while I was going 60-70. Bah.

Also a waste of money because it's been proven time & again that "if you build it they will come." Widening roads equals more traffic.

Wow, how I don't miss the 90 minute Burlington to Stoughton commute....
The main problem with that particular commute are the bottlenecks created by Routes 24 and 95 South. Back ups on those routes can tie up traffic as far north as Route 9. Widening 128 to 4 lanes is a good idea but I'm not sure how the faster flow of traffic onto those gridlocked routes is going to help much. I suppose if you're going straight down 128 to the Expressway you might be able to shave a couple of minutes off your evening commute. Probably not worth the millions of dollars the state is spending, though.
What's the hurry?

I also recall late-1970's articles promising completion of the project by 1984, but the Globe doesn't have archives that go that far back.
