Turkey diagram

Cohasset Police report a crash Thursday morning indirectly caused by turkeys on Rte. 3A: One driver stopped to let the birds cross; the driver two cars behind plowed into the car in front and was cited for being a motoring turkey for following too close.

There has been some traffic calming on 3A in Hingham east of the rotary in the past 10 years along with development in this section of Cohasset including an Avalon development, a new mixed use retail center, and the biggest cause of traffic near accidents East of the Hudson (not sourced) - a Dunkin Donuts.

The state still has the speed limit here at 45 though, which is great at 11 at night, but not during morning commutes with people stopping and waving people from DD and the Mary Lou's into traffic as though we are some country crossroads in Somerset County Maine.

I'm waiting for someone to really get messed up here before the state and town takes action.

PS - In regards to the Turkeys, with all due respect to our rising overlord; Turkey Liberation Front, I speed up and hit the horn. They have to learn that we will not be intimidated by their tactics and that our way of life will reign supreme until the Great Gobbler rises in some state park or nature preserve to show us the true light. Until then you are going to get WKRP'd by me and my Stockholm made attack vehicle.

There is no justification for speeding up and sounding your horn. My experience is that if you proceed slowly and steadily on course, the birds will move out of your way. By your actions, you invite a tragic outcome for the turkeys, and possibly unpleasant consequences for yourself. Carrion can be very difficult to remove from the undercarriage of a car, and smells really bad for a long time. You may also be subject to criminal animal cruelty charges.

Don't be a dick.

1. Thanks for your excellent driving advice! I'll take that under advisement.

2. Do you also slow down for the animals perceived as lesser on the cute scale (pigeon, mouse, rat, squirrel)? If you don't slow down for them, you could be subject to animal cruelty charges as well.

3. I drive a not to common red Saab. If you see me with feathers in the front grille, go ahead and drop a dime on me. If you do, hope you are a vegan, if not, you are a hypocrite.

If you hit a turkey at speed it's going to damage your precious red Saab. There's a reason why people don't want to hit a 25lb animal at speed and it isn't because they care deeply about its well being.

"70 mph" was what the driver copped to.

My niece's husband, an insurance adjuster, was a tad skeptical given the damage to the Mercedes convertible. Trashed windshield with atomized Turkey gore in every nook, cranny, and surface of the interior.

They had to hire the local crime scene cleaner to resolve the claim, and had to replace the seats.

Speed counts when impacting one or more 25lb birds - so accelerating into one is not the best idea.

I was driving along a body of water next to 95 one morning after working overnight. Not at my sharpest.

A gaggle of geese were taking off from shoulder and across the highway. I made the quick judgement that they'd clear my path without me needing to brake. You know, like pidgeons or seagulls in a parking lot.

Wrong! Suddenly the sky darkened and my entire field of view started filling with geese. I breaker hard and the last straggler seemed to look at me as it pumped its wings and cleared my car.

Terrifying. I would have been severely injured if collision occurred.
I certainly slow down for birds now.

They don't really look like turkeys.

Turkeys are hand shaped.

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!
