Thumbs are back

I've added back thumbs-up voting for comments. Will watch over the next week to see what that does to site performance.

Can we have down too?

It's best the way it is: show appreciation or agreement but otherwise don't complain. A lot of good posts on Uhub aren't "liked" but they still have validity. Adam does a good job keeping the trolls and spammers at bay so Uhub need not follow the Reddit model.

I hate having thumbs down. I like the thumbs so I can agree without lengthening the comments section saying "me too".

When I first went with a thumbs-up thing, I didn't turn on thumbs down because I thought the comments were negative enough. Unfortunately, that hasn't changed, so I still don't want to enable them.

Or at least unjustified. It seems to me that when not given an option to otherwise show disagreement/disapproval (especially of comments that are blatantly rude, crude or unhelpful) we get side threads with multiple responders basically saying the same thing in response to an initial statement, followed by long back-and-fourths that are heavy on vituperation and short on rational discourse. At the same time, some people who might have something sincere and substantial to add may be reluctant to get drawn into this sort of thing. Result = longer, angrier, wandering threads with fewer overall partipants.

In contrast, it may be that a comment with a big number of downthumbs rather “speaks for itself”, and people are more inclined to simply then abandon the comment, rather than extend it into its own side thread. When smart filtering (eg Slashdot et al) or registered-only voting (disqus et al) options are available, flame wars seem even less common. Result = more focused, less-distracted threads with broader participation.

Of course, the above is supposition as well, based on my own experience on this forum and others. I looked briefly for solid looking research, but found little. I would welcome good citations that supported either viewpoint.

Why the thumb?
I was hoping for a creative alternative. The thumb is always in an opposing position anyway.
Also, what gives with the silent 'b'?! "Thumb" is too close to "Dumb" anyway too.

I think before the robots and Boston Dynamics replace our anatomical oddities with a digital configuration, we should at least have one last chance at alternative physical expressions of approval or disapproval.

I think offering us "Big Toe Up" would be nice. It would signify a last progressive evolution of the system.

It should be a turkey in the summer and lawn chair or traffic cone in the winter.

It was strange to realize how much I missed the thumbs.

It definitely wasn't as much fun visiting or posting without them. Welcome back my friend!

Plus you don't have thumbs, so are you allowed to comment on this?
