Third person charged in connection with East Boston man's murder

Demetrius Cast, 20, of Everett, was arraigned today on charges that include armed robbery in connection with the pot deal turned murder that left Duncan Ketter's body on the street at Orleans and Marginal streets on Sunday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Cast was arraigned in his hospital bed at Mass. General, where he has been since the incident, which authorities say started when a friend of Ketter's arranged to sell pot to a 16-year-old and ended when Thorus O'Brien sprung up from the back of the SUV the kid, Ketter and the alleged pot seller were in, demanded the pot and, when an argument began, started shooting.

According to prosecutors, Cast was in the back seat with the victims when O'Brien fired and was struck in the arm.

A judge set bail at $350,000, but Cast won't be going anywhere but jail after he gets out of the hospital if he can make bail, because his bail on outstanding charges out of Malden and Woburn was revoked, the DA's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

How much pot was it? A mother load or chump change? Youth stuck on stupid. Is it really worth it? For what? To buy a pair of sneakers or an iPhone? To buy more weed? Now someone's dead over it. And no. Don't expect all kids to learn a lesson by this incident. It's peer mob mentality at its best no matter what the circumstances are.

Why is a 16 year old buying pot. Can't the parents buy it for him since it's legal in MA?

Clearly, no one can legally buy or sell pot while the legislators work through who will get licensed and how they’ll be taxed. But ask yourself: do people kill to get something because they can’t get it at a store or do they kill for it because it would otherwise cost them money and can easily be turned into money?

there have been more marijuana related murders than cocaine or heroin related murders in the last 5-10 years?

No way. I'm willing to bet the contrary. Maybe more murders by people under the influence of alcohol.

I would bet there are just a bit more deaths in the entire heroin supply chain than cannabis.

And I can tell you that the overwhelming number of drug related homicides, at least at the state level, involve marijuana. People are surprised by this but it's true. Actually every drug related homicide I've worked on in the past 15 years has involved weed. Think it's probably because the risk is perceived as pretty low and the profits are high (no pun intended), so tons of normal people get involved in selling it and don't realize that there are a lot of people willing to stick a gun in their face over a little bit of weed. Also they also sometimes don't realize they're stepping on the toes of much bigger dealers and get killed over it.

What on earth does that have to do with anything? This is about murder, not weed.
