That water is wicked cold

The Coast Guard alerts us that New England rivers and lakes and the nearby ocean are now "dangerously cold," which means you could die quickly if you jump or fall in, especially if you don't have a life jacket to keep you afloat long enough for somebody to fish you out.
You wouldn't think people would need to be told that, but the Coast Guard also informs us that 18 people have drowned in New England waters since Labor Day and that none was wearing a life jacket. Also, in Massachusetts, wearing a life jacket isn't just a good idea - it's the law, at least through next May.

Also, in Massachusetts, wearing a life jacket isn't just a good idea - it's the law, at least through next May.
I'm hoping you mean "wearing a life jacket while on the water," or else most of us are in trouble with our outerwear. (On the other hand, Massachusetts would make so much revenue that we might not need toll hikes...)

Actually, they have these
Actually, they have these things called "SOSpenders" that you can wear somewhat more discreetly than a life jacket. They are inflated when you hit the water. My parents wear them in rough weather on the Great Lakes.
Why only until May 2009?!?
That's ridiculous. The life-jacket law, imho, should be in place all year around.
