Deadspin tells us what the Needham Gold Medal winner said during her victim statement on the convicted sexual assaulter who used to be her team doctor.
Her words are very powerful. She seems like a brave and smart person. I hope others involved in US gymnastics who let this abuse happen are held accountable.
On the other hand you have the pope who is down in Chile victim blaming people who were raped by priests. The catholic church is such a disgusting cult. Tax the churches.
First of all, kudos to Aly for a brave and passionate speech. And Nassar can rot in hell with Bernie and the other child molesters.
What the Pope actually said per the NY Times and is perfectly reasonable:
Francis told reporters Thursday there was not a shred of evidence against Bishop Juan Barros Madrid, who victims of the Rev. Fernando Karadima, Chile’s most notorious priest, have accused of being complicit in his crimes.
“The day someone brings me proof against Bishop Barros, then I will talk,” Francis said before celebrating Mass outside the northern Chilean city of Iquique. “But there is not one single piece of evidence. It is all slander. Is that clear?”
1) How about hitting US Gymnastics or the US Olympic Committee for something - or maybe that will happen. Sounds like they were at least as bad as the Church - or worse because after what happened with the church about 15 years ago, you'd think adults in positions of authority would have their antennae up on this crap.
2) Tax the church? Difficult - although I question why we can't tax them, but contributions to them are tax deductible - doesn't that violate the establishment clause? My guess is this is like gun control - no matter how much sense it makes, the political powers that be won't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
"First of all, kudos to Aly for a brave and passionate speech."
Absolutely. There were many victims that gave statements at the hearing, maybe 100 or so.
Maybe we should just let it stand alone for itself, rather than bring in extraneous issues that have little to do with the case in hand.
Steveil is right about the Pope and the USOC that turned a blind eye to what was going on, if that's what happened. It appears they might be culpable in this. If so, the power of lawsuits to 'open the books' so to speak might be quite informative.
As far as issue #2, the IRS recognizes 503 C (3?) filers as non profit.
Raisman has said she's going to continue training at Brestyan's gym in Burlington, which I take to be a vote of confidence in Mihai Brestyan. He may not be the most personable guy, but he's not a molester.
First they raised the age to get more mature competitors. Then they started encouraging "empowering" public appearances. Next they encouraged team solidarity and ...
Then the women realized that they could all go to Michigan, file police reports, and work together on taking this creep down.
I don't think they are done yet - the USOC and USA Gymnastics are lit up in red lasers. Ditto for the University of Michigan.

Focus, man, focus
Do you always veer off like this?
Oh, hey
I agree with Kinopio, the President banged a porn star and it's a shock to precisely nobody, and the latest fad is eating laundry soap.
You forgot to mention cars

Um what?
Which "Bernie" are you talking about?
Cardinal
As in Law
Got it.
Thanks. There are reasons that he never set foot in the US again - like, being taken off the plane in handcuffs.
Brave woman.
Brave woman.
Staying with Brestyan

I don't think she's done yet, either

MSU, not U of M
It's Michigan State that ignored student athlete reports about Nassar for two decades.
Thank you
Thanks for the correction.
Deadspining
Damed auto correct: Deadspin not Deadsping
Stupid typo fixed, thanks
Wish I could blame it on auto-correct, but, no, I wrote the item on my laptop, so have no excuse.
