Meaghan Sinclair spotted this snowy owl in her Somerville neighborhood today.
This has proven to be an "irruption" season for the owls - in which the population of lemmings on which they normally feed exploded, leading to more owl hatchlings - and lots of owls flying south in search of food. Good Morning Gloucester has been following the exploits of a pair of snowy owls there.

I think it’s the Barred Owl that hoots like you have here ( just so the kids at home know).

This one's a tricky call. But I think the head shape gives it away as a Snowy. The brown in the feathers makes one think twice, but maybe that's just a variation for Snowys. Maybe a first-year plumage. Barreds are much more brown, and have the big full-moon faces.
Anyone know where in Somerville this was spotted? Great catch no matter what it is!

I thought perhaps a barred as well, but the feathered feet changed my mind. I think it's a snowy owl.

I am pretty sure that Matt was referring to the headline, which mimics a Barred Owl very nicely, rather than the owl in the picture, which is definitely a Snowy Owl. Snowy Owls don't go "who, who are you?"

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said ""You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away""
I staggered back to.

I always thought the coolest part about that song was the story that Pete Townsend was getting drunk with Sex Pistols before he woke up in that SoHo doorway.
A sad reminder that music sucks now, and the rock stars of the 70's, 80's and early 90's had way more personality and were much better musically.

Excellent owl photo! Always a treat to see any owl in or near Boston, and a snowy is an especially fortunate sighting.
