Dumbass drives around shooting off fireworks early in the morning; wakes, startles residents from West Roxbury to Brookline Village

On neighborhood Facebook groups, West Roxbury, Roslindale, Hyde Park and Jamaica Plain residents report being startled awake either shortly before or after 5 a.m. by at least two loud booms. On Twitter, Pete Cannon reports:

Two separate loud bangs, one right after the other, heard from near Fallon Field.Think it was around 5:20-5:30 AM.

On the Roslindale Message Board, one resident reported seeing "a professional grade, show quality illegal mortar" shot off at Fallon Field in Roslindale.

City Councilor Matt O'Malley, though, adds that it wasn't just Fallon Field:

Spoke with @bostonpolice, it was indeed fireworks. They believe someone was driving around SW Boston setting them off (which would explain the different times & different n’hoods).

KMV confirms:

It was someone driving around and lighting fireworks off. I heard the whole thing go down on the BPD radio channel.

Gareth K reports:

Yes! heard them over the course of a couple hours at different distances. One was really loud near us (Hynes field).

R. Davis reports:

Yes, heard them a couple times during the night. I live near the monument in JP and they sounded really close, but my guess was that it could’ve been related to blasting work on the Arborway project.

AlderFish reports hearing booms more like 2:30 a.m.

Heard three separate instances of two booms in quick succession between about 4:40 and 5:30. I'm by Brookline Village.

Y'know, nobody was cowering in their basements, it's just that people were awoken by a jackass. Sounds like you need to move though, or cut down on the caffeine intake.

I happened to be up for a brief period and also heard the two booms in general succession.

I'm off Florence down by Healy Field. It sounded like it was coming from the direction of the business district so a possible location at Fallon Field seems to be about right.

My take... a couple of M80s

Setting off fireworks in different locations, per BPD via City Councilor Matt O'Malley.

using their ShotSpotter system to triangulate the position of the bangs and then identify the car in surveillance footage from cameras at those locations. Yeah, catching fireworks throwing bozos probably isn't BPD's highest priority but the technology exists if they were interested.

ShotSpotter's pretty pricey and the city hasn't installed it everywhere - like Roslindale, West Roxbury and Hyde Park don't have it because they're not considered high-crime areas.

Channel 25 will be reporting on it on its 10 p.m. newscast, including an interview with Matt O'Malley.
