UPDATE: East Boston Municipal Court Judge John E. McDonald, Jr. recused himself due to a "familial connection" to Marquado; her arraignment was delayed until April 18, the DA's office reports.
Donna Marquado, owner of Donna's Restaurant, 980 Saratoga St., faces arraignment in East Boston Municipal Court today on charges she kept $60,000 in collected state meals taxes, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Marquado faces 39 counts each of failing to pay taxes and filing false tax returns on the money, following an investigation by the state Department of Revenue and State Police, the DA's office reports.

If the allegations are true, the owners have no one to blame but themselves. When you commit tax fraud, you're stealing from every other law abiding taxpayer. Such criminals are not good people, no matter how pleasant they might appear on the surface.
A long established business should know better. Surely they've seen what happens to other places that tried to pull off similar scams. So, they're also pretty stupid.

I've been a frequent patron at Donna's for over 5 years. The Marquardo's are good, hard working people. They show up to work every day and greet all their customers with a smile and great service (not to mention great food). Equally important, they employ good people; Whether you are management, ownership or employee, everyone is treated the same.

I don't know if the allegations are true or not, but good people do not steal. This goes beyond simply not paying taxes, as it entails collecting people's tax payments and then pocketing the money rather than forwarding it to where it was intended to go.

I have to believe this is an oversite more than a case of trying to dupe the system. I would guess she makes half that in a month, so to risk family name and business for 60k (yes to me it's a lot of money) doesn't seem worth it. Now there are some cash only places that sketchy AF, and that's the reason they are cash only. I have always been leary of them but Donna's seems to be the exception as far as being sketchy
