Roxbury men charged as dirt-biking jerks; bikes and a quad seized
Boston Police report arresting three Roxbury men after the trio had spent the evening allegedly stunting their way through traffic in the Newmarket Square area.
Police say officers, accompanied by a state trooper and a state environmental officer spotted the three around 6:30 p.m. and then quietly followed them to a U-Haul storage facility on Mass. Ave. at Rusfield Street:
At this point, officers attempted to conduct a stop of the males to no avail. The males fled on foot with the bikes into the facility and the officers pursued. Once inside, officers were able to apprehend the three males without further incident. As a result of the stop, officers seized three dirt bikes, a motor scooter, and a quad off-road vehicle, all of which were illegally and hazardously stored inside the facility. BPD and Boston Fire Department Hazmat Units responded to make the area safe
Jason Martinez, 24, Giovanny Martinez, 23, and Naija Joseph, 24, all of Roxbury, were charged with disorderly conduct, negligent operation and operating with a suspended or revoked license, police say, adding they will also get tickets for various traffic violations.
Innocent, etc.

Yes!
Nip this in the bud before summer.
Overkill on one detail
OK, they probably had a couple of gas cans and maybe some motor oil stored in the unit. And yes someone has to take that away, but is it really a hazmat situation?
Probably not, but...
A police officer isn't necessarily the best-trained person to be able to make that assessment -- so you bring in the guys whose job it is to do that.
Featherbedding
Firefighters can't just make up overtime ... that's only for the Staties
Yes, it’s not up to BPD to
Yes, it’s not up to BPD to make determinations re: hazardous materials. Would you rather they not follow protocol?
ISD
I think they may need either BFD or ISD to claim the hazmat situation that way they can seize the bikes. I think they also do this when they find them at residential address.
Really
Im shocked the cops have nothing better to do then mess with a few guys having a little fun seems pretty extreme maybe unlike these privileged entitled cops who grow up on acres of land these guys have no where else to ride there dirt bikes
Acres of Land?
Most of the Boston cops I know grew up in....wait for it.....Boston, not Middleborough or Charlton.
Dirt bike riding is not a right. Like other forms of driving on a public road, It is a privilege and guess what, unregistered bikes like those in the photo above are not allowed to be on the streets.
Also, with the hazmat crews here. You have gasoline being stored in a facility that is not supposed to have hazardous materials being stored inside. I'm sure the operator of the facility looked the other way on this rental.
You want to be a jackarse on an unregistered bike, move to Carver and tear of those boglands.
You want fire potential to increase in a building, move to Russia.
Nice job BPD and BFD.
Born with a silver spoon in
Born with a silver spoon in your mouth and a stick up your arse. Pompous is probably the best way to describe you in your personal life
Seriously?
It's dangerous for pedestrians and other drivers in the area, to begin with. It's also a nuisance to people who live and work in the area. We don't let people play music as loud as they want at parties or bars or restaurants or in parks because that often annoys other people -- and that's not about privilege or being entitled or race. If I want to go shoot clay pigeons because that's recreation for me, I don't have the right to do it in the Public Garden just because I can't afford to do it on acres of land in the country or out at a shooting range.
There are plenty of ways of "having a little fun" that aren't a nuisance and aren't dangerous to the rest of the public.
Mmmm kay
There are dirt tracks in NH where they can race all they want.
These aren't any further from Boston than some of these suburban joy riders travel from.
Gotta be a troll
Nobody thinks Boston cops are free ranged.
Suburban Cops In The City
At the Red Sox Parade in 2013 I was over by the library and there was a contingent of suburban and exurban (not ex-urban) cops, I believe were a regional SWAT Team They were lined up in formation looking ready to shoot anyone who looked like that had ever walked past a mosque let alone be different from the faces they were used to seeing everyday in their town.
All the Boston Cops around them were smiling, cracking jokes and busting balls with each other and me and my friends.
Police Departments recruit in their own areas for a reason. No police chief wants some camo wear as daywear ding dong from Central Maine patrolling Downtown Crossing thinking that everyone not named Clem is a threat.
That's why in my town, a great number of the cops are mostly local guys. They know the troublemakers and know how to deal with things correctly. That is why Boston recruits as many locals as they can get onto the force. They know what they are doing.
Civil service makes sure they are local.....
Boston pretty much has 100% residents because of civil service rules. Some towns have to take on non-resident disabled or regular vets if they don't have enough residents on their list but Boston has no choice by law but to take residents first (you have to live in Boaton 1 year before the exam)
Having grown up in central maine
The police force there is exceptional. Never had any complaints. People up in central maine aren’t the type of hicks you’d expect to find. In fact, I’ve noticed way more racists down here in Boston and the surrounding area than I ever did in Maine
Yeah But...
Paul LePage
Yo Phil
Where were you that week when they were terrorizing the interstates and the pedestrian/bike only paths alike?
Having a little fun?
Fun for themselves. They are almost running over people and causing accidents. They pass in no passing zones. No fun for the public.
You mean they were behaving...
.... like Boston drivers? Good thing they were arrested. Only Boston drivers are allowed to pull stunts like that.
Hope the bike owners get
Hope the bike owners get their property back.
Narrator
But thankfully they won't.*
*I initially read this as the OP wanting these knuckleheads to get their bikes back after they deal with their charges. Now, I read it as he's suggesting the original owners of these vehicles get them back because the knuckleheads stole them from someone. Well, they're dirt bikes and ATVs (and the pic makes it seem like they might even have some original protective shipping material still on them)...so I'm betting they just bought them...and had no business with them in the city...so I'm gonna continue hoping these knuckleheads don't get their brand new bikes back.
Civil forfeiture?
Gross. At least endorse the bikes being auctioned off and the net proceeds being paid to the parties from whom they were confiscated.
Criminal forfeiture
Learn to read. If the cops auction them off to reduce the cost of any sentenced fines, I'm okay with that.
So just to be clear... if you
So just to be clear... if you were involved in a motor vehicle criminal incident such as marked Lane violation, or similar charges that resulted in you being charged with a crime and you car was confinscated and then auctioned off to pay for your sentencing you would be alright with that? You’re a meat stick. Just because you break the law does not give the government the right to retain and then auction or destroy your personal property. Point blank period. I would certainly have it out for my arresting officers. This is just poor community policing. Most people with issues related to this have lived here from 2010 or more recent. You newbies should just leave as we were perfectly fine before your arrival and probably won’t miss any of you 311 calling “it’s my neighborhood too” kind of people.
Straw man dead
Moving violations are civil not criminal.
probably not ...
First off -- many of the bikes used by the idiot stunters turn out to be stolen when the police finally get a chance to grab and examine them. Hence the ease at which the morons ditch them
And a lot of the smaller 50cc vehicles don't have VINs, plates or registration details that connect back to the legal owner so there is a lot of hassle trying to either claim the vehicle as yours or get it back to the owner.
Been through this myself recovering various stolen Vespa's over the years. Mine was large enough to have a VIN # and plates so the cops could find me when it was eventually recovered. But when I went to the tow lot to pick it up I saw row after row after row of rusting scooters and bikes just laying in the impound lot. They'll stay there forever until junked because there is no easy way to tie them to an actual owner.
When you go to the Boston
When you go to the Boston cops to report a stolen scooter, they just laugh it off so any chance is even worse...
The Kids We're Talking About Here
Wouldn't be caught dead on one of your Vespas. So your unfortunate experiences with scooter theft have nothing to do with the guys who kept their dirtbikes over at the U-Haul.
Except...
The video from the expressway last month showed numerous guys on Vespas and this article indicates that they had at least one scooter along with the dirt bikes and ATV in the storage unit...
But other than that, sure.
Problem solved
The Silver Line in Chelsea will be opening in a few weeks and vehicles are already using it for a shortcut. Vandals have already spray painted the walls which no doubt will be cleaned up the day before that the Governor comes to dedicate the new dirt bike speedway.
Just Wondering
just wondering whatever happened to the Mass Statie that shot the guy on the expressway for riding the dirt bike??? if my memory serves me right he also was implicated on racist hate remarks on his social media pages!!! does anybody know his status has he servered his 2 weeks paid vacation sentence yet???? Probably should be getting a promotion anyday now i would imagine!!! along with the others that robbed the tax payers for millions hey atleast they got those dirt bike riders off he streets something tells me those guys riding the dirt bikes will see alot more of the court system then all those staties combined
Just curious
How much would one of the bikes in the picture go for new? I have no idea. Couple thousand?
I called the cops on these 3
I called the cops on these 3 while on business in the 400's of Columbia Ave around 3:30PM. They were doing wheelies and were playing chicken with traffic all up and down the street
Glad they got caught!
You sir are an arsehole...
You sir are an arsehole... for sure. Your business must suck if you have time to waste reporting dirt bikes. Maybe they should have burglarized your place of business? Would that be a preferable activity? Like I don’t get it... would you people and yes I mean you white people prefer them to be committing violent or drug related crimes?
STRAWMAN
Faulty logic. Fallacy city here. There is absolutely no evidence that this activity is a substitute for gun violence.
Just more assholes like yourself finding strawman boogeymen to justify your dangerous antisocial bullshit.
What is it about Newmarket
What is it about Newmarket Square? Wasn't that a hotspot for dragracing at late night last year, and nowthis?
Waste of resources
This is the biggest waste of tax payer money and resources. I actually laughed that after police wasted time with this two people were shot in Roxbury the next day. These bikes are a passive way of enjoyment “bikes up, guns down” that is a big think in the dirtbike community. If you would prefer these dirt bike riders to sell their bikes and buy guns to start shooting one another again? Because the minor traffic issues they cause seem to be better then and entire street blocked off with yellow tape from Boston’s most recent shooting death. I haven’t seen an article regarding a biker crashing into a car or injuring someone other than themselves. Think about that. “Bikes up guns down”
That's nice dear
Now pay for the damage to the region from these jackasses - out of your own pocket. Damage to non-motor pedestrian and bike ways. Damage to parks and trails. Damage to natural areas.
Pay for it and we will talk.
In the meantime, feel lucky that MA doesn't have a gun culture like Oklahoma or Texas or there would be some ugly going down once these jackasses cut through on someones property or if they keep running people off sidewalks.
Good thing
There wasting time chasing motor scooter riding kids, If it weren't for that, the police mite have real work to do like chasing HEROIN DEALERS, you know the stuff that kills people and has first class citizens foaming at the mouth in groups on the Methadone Mile.
