Right after Paris and Florence, US News and World Report declares, citing such attractions as our Ethiopian restaurants on cobblestone streets and our five subway lines. Also, the best time for a summer vacation in Boston might be in the winter, the article pronounces.

Closely-guarded secret

If you live in Boston long enough, you are invited to a secret initiation ceremony at which you inducted into the Mysteries of Beantown, at which you discover that for centuries true Bostonians, or Beaners, have called it that. The ceremonial dinner consists of Baked Beans accompanied by Three-Bean Salad. Long ago the secret was revealed to the world by a notorious traitor, a New York turncoat, named Frazee. A disinformation campaign was mounted to discredit the story, and all true Beaners took to saying "nobody from Boston calls it that". This was reasonably effective.
I live in Cambridge, myself, and have never been inducted. But the People's Republic has spies everywhere, and we know the truth.

"Stay especially alert in areas like Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan, where reports of crime are not uncommon. All of these neighborhoods are situated south of Boston proper."
Indeed, so not proper.
No mention of Downtown?

Different kinds of crime.
Denying that Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury have the most serious kinds of crime is part of the problem. You are part of the problem.

Where did I deny that there was crime in those areas?
Please cite the exact sentence.
In fact, I posted a link to a map of such crime - it isn't limited to downtown or to the neighborhoods mentioned.
People who "believe" things, don't bother reading things, and don't bother looking for facts are a huge part of all the problems.

Can't even make a joke around here without the armchair Freuds showing up. Again.
Last word on this subject, I am not a frothing at the mouth rageaholic, just a guy with opinions that some of you don't like and obviously can't rebut, so you resort to making yourselves feel better by trying to paint me as Patrick Bateman.
For the last time, any of you that would take such emotional umbrage at my posts, grow a pair of balls and call me an engage with me. You have the chance all you want, but again, you seem to all just hide behind your screen names and take these silly jabs that do nothing but encourage me.
Anybody else, I'll be enjoying this lovely day at the Arboreteum with a fat preroll.

Heck, sometimes I can be prone to bouts of boosterism that make Shirley Leung look like a cynic. That said, #3 in the whole world is a bit much even to me. Definitely top ten in the nation, perhaps top 5, but to point to a little bit I saw in the blurb, I'm not picking Boston in the summer for the weather. Better than Washington DC or Florida to be sure, but I'd take just about anywhere on the British Isles in July and August over Boston, along with the Pacific Northwest.

Most people try to get away from it: students go home, we all take turns going on vacation, etc.

I'm going to call bullshit. Paris is Horrible in the summer, especially due to pollution and poor transportation. Am assuming that, if you "lived in Paris," c'etait pdt une periode scolaire, pdt un internat.
What's wrong with the transportation?

You don't have to look too far to see someone talking down a city.
Of course, my favorite one of late is to read about how bad the subway is in New York. Not living there, I don't ride it, but I love the how some here say the T should be more like that, while New Yorkers will come up here and talk about how much better the T is.
Honestly, all I want for a summer vacation destination is not too hot, but warm, and things to do. Still don't see Boston at #3.
Chicago though

But the people of Chicago have a whole lot more to gripe about.
But to my point of people loving to talk down their cities, while Chicago rebuilt their elevated system (which is basically what they did) you know people bitched and moaned about it. Imagine if the T shut down the Red Line from Kendall to Alewife for 6 months to get everything in tip top shape (which is what happened with the CTA.) In the end the signals, switches, rails, and whatnot would be great, meaning those delays would be a thing of the past, but for a year people would go on about how bad the T is to be shutting down for reconstruction.
