Roslindale postal worker charged with stealing mail, much of which wound up in Weymouth

A now former worker at the Roslindale post office was arrested and arraigned today for allegedly opening mail and stealing the stuff inside for more than a year, the US Attorney's office reports.

Megan Hawes, 28, of Roslindale, was arraigned in US District Court in Boston on one count of theft of mail matter by a Postal Service employee.

Hawes allegedly rifled through mail between March of last year and May 10 of this year - when police in Weymouth found stacks of undelivered mail addressed to Roslindale residents in an SUV in a tow lot. The SUV had sat there since March 30.

If convicted, Hawes could face up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

Innocent, etc.

Did she end up profiting from this at all, I wonder? That's a lot of potential jail time for stealing Eversource bills and uncashable birthday checks.

This is not about the amount stollen but rather tampering with the mails , which is extremely serious. Consider all the important mail that didn’t get delivered here and the implications that has for some people waiting on things like social security checks, immigration papers etc. not to mention the impact it has on confidence of people in the UPS. 5 years in prison is about right.

My nephew graduated in early June last year. I sent a check/grad card in late June to his house in Quincy. Well it never arrived.
I asked the bank what to do. Either pay $30-$35 to "cancel" the check or just wait it out (the check expires in 6 months). I waited it out until the end of December and the check was never cashed.
The crooked postal workers grab the pretty colored envelopes with cards in them. Hoping that Grandma put a $20 bill in with the card.

I’ve been missing an important piece of mail that was sent during this time. I was hoping it would turn up in this vehicle but it is still missing. I wonder if the mail they found was delivered or is it being held as evidence? Calling the local post office is a nightmare, you have to dial a national number that gives you a long spiel of useless choices instead of the person who might be able to help.
