Another round of layoffs at the tabloidette today, including Boston's best spot-news photographer, Mark Garfinkel (who'd been at the Herald for 25 years).

That really sucks, he takes the best pictures inside and outside of "news", I follow him on Twitter.I hope he finds something where his talents can show but if he was there for 25 years he must have liked working for them.
I will be honest, I was never a big Herald fan but I hate seeing people who are passionate about their work lost their jobs.
Mark Garfinkel was one of very few good things about the Herald

It's a freaking travesty is what it is. Why don't they just shut down already? We need a REAL alternative to the Glob, but what's left of the Herald is obviously not it. Somebody hire Garfinkel, along with Kat Cornetta on the sports beat, and put out a legit paper. Oh, hey -- Adam, I'm sure you've got plenty of time (and cash) to start that up, right? I kid, I kid ... unless you really would do it. Maybe?

that Adam regularly scoops the Globe? He already is the competition, and he's winning. <3
Thanks!

But the Globe still does good work (anybody read their Sunday story about hidden court sessions?).
That was an excellent piece

To the Globe on that piece and the NY Times on Trump. Still a place for great journalism if America is willing to pay for it.

Thank you for the shout out. I'm a longtime reader of UniversalHub, and I was shocked to see my name mentioned here. I'm just a little ol' Herald sports freelancer who gets the occasional story here and there. I wish it was more and that I could go full-time, but...so is life. I work a job outside of journalism to pay the bills and get my kids insurance.
Mark is a fantastic person and photographer. He doesn't deserve to be shown the door in this way. I'm absolutely crushed for him and the others being let go today and in the coming months. They were not just immensely talented, but are some of the kindest people you could ever work with.

Screw the Herald

Recently I saw a copy of the Herald on the table at DD so I decided to take a look, something that I hadn't done in a long time. I was appalled by the lying, hateful, crazy, right wing, extremist ,conspiracy theory, BS that permeated the news section. This included a headline about "Pocahontas" in what was supposedly a news not opinion piece.
The sports section was good and was the only thing that I ever found appealing at the Herald. Good riddance if it does go out of business. We don't need 2 papers if one of them feels the need to lie and hate in order to advance their extremist agenda.
Hat tip to Adam for coining the term tabloidette.

Pssst.... the Globe does the same for the left wing you just don't notice because of your own biases. Newspapers are dying because people read, watch, and listen to media of the preferential biases online for free. A true centrist/balanced newspaper doesn't exist in the US outside of serious economics journals where dueling content is found on each page.

Not to absolve the Globe of bias, but I think once you're parroting the "Pocahontas" line, you lose the ability to even pretend to be quality journalism
Pssst back at you

Pssst , you are wrong.
The Globe does not as a matter of policy and practice engage in racist name calling headlines, repeating conspiracy theories unchallenged, outright lying, and does a good job of separating reporting from opinion.
Your alleged advocacy of centrist balance is either right wing trolling and/or willful ignorance., and is just plain silly to anyone who pays attention.
In fact the Democratic party/ liberals occupy the center, and the Republicans/conservatives have gone straight to extremist hell with overt racism, bigotry, lies, misogyny, hypocrisy, greed , advocacy of pollution, hate, and lying conspiracy theories. Even the so called "socialist Democrats" are nothing more than traditional New Deal Democrats, which is not a bad thing, but is in no way anything close to the "left" in any other country.

Are you sure you were not actually reading a Globe article by Kevin Cullen?

You're making this up.
Outside of possibly the editorial page, not much in the conspiracy theory business. As far as lying, you could be describing several articles from a certain New York broadsheet. As for crazy, track down the Boston Globe from April 1, 2016. That also might get in your "hateful" column.
Yes, the Herald tracks to the right. It's been a Republican paper since 1856. The Herald has also been the only news source that has cared about unsolved cold cases in Boston, putting the fire on law enforcement to do something about these after the other press has moved on to the next thing. Boston being a two newspaper town is a strength.
So only the Herald covers unsolved cold cases???

Total nonsense. I'm not going to do your work for you but here's a hint. Search the Globe website and you will find your allegation is not true.

In print, the way that helps preserve the future of the medium. The Globe has never made it an issue the way the Herald has. At best, the Globe tells of the woman who has been camping out at the Mayor's office to push to get closure for her husband's murder (which is not to say she doesn't care about other cold cases, but that is what drove her in the first place.) The Herald, on the other hand, pushes the data on the cases, showing how certain communities tend to have more unsolved cases than others.

The sports section used to be great with columnists Felger & Buckley, now Buckley just left so it's not worth a read.
Again, it's hard to run a paper for people who hate to read.

Herald readers are the same ones who now claim that they don't need "news" because they get all their info from FB. Those 2 paragraph Herald articles are too much for them now.
I'm no fan of the Herald, but..

This is a shame. I feel badly for the people who have lost their jobs, particularly Mark Garfinkel, who is a superb, passionate photographer. Let's hope the Globe hires him, because we need him to stay in town.
That's an opportunity not to be missed.
I'm not crazy about team sports for the most part, but their coverage seemed to be pretty comprehensive. We need that.
I wish its point of view were centrist, and not so far to the right. Although I'm a proud liberal, and as much as I much as I prefer the Globe, we do need to have a two-newspaper town.
