Admitted cyberstalker from Newton gets 17 1/2 years in federal prison
Ryan Lin, who admitted earlier this year to spending 18 months terrorizing a former roommate - in a campaign that included calling in more than 100 bomb threats under her name to various institutions in Newton, Waltham and Chelmsford- was sentenced today to 17 1/2 years in prison, the US Attorney's office reports.
Lin, whom authorities say was a bad seed in high school, used his tech skills to try to ruin the woman's life:
Lin hacked into the victim’s online accounts and devices and stole the victim’s private photographs, personally identifiable information, and private diary entries, which contained sensitive details about her medical, psychological and sexual history, and distributed the material to hundreds of people associated with her.
Lin also created and posted fraudulent online profiles in the victim’s name and solicited rape fantasies, including a “gang bang,” and other sexual activities, which in turn caused men to show up at the victim’s home. He also engaged in a number of other activities targeting the victim, including relentless anonymous text messaging and hoaxes.

I remember this one
Was this one of the three dudes whose out of hand pranking was supposed to be heralding a new era of anti semitism because Trump?
No matter. When the Israeli teenager and the Bernie bro from Missouri get put away for their bullshit, I predict that the new lefty meme du jour will be wondering if Trump will pardon them. Kind of the way you know you all openly wondered if W was going to leave office at the end of his second term. Because back then, if you will recall, it was W who was LITERALLY HITLER.

No.
What a sick comment
Go away you Trumpian troll. Far away. What a sick excuse for a human being you are
You OK?
Your memory seems to be going. You've been here long enough, and I know you're one of those people who seems to obsess over everything I write, so you should recall that I was writing about this guy's activities even before he was caught (although obviously I didn't know it was him), and that I didn't use a "Trumpland" tag on the story.
But how about our Our Kleptocrat in Chief, huh? The one who's sending children on trains to concentration camps?
How about that
Trains in Texas. Neat.
I've been here long enough for you to know that I am unmoved by word games that make blithe allusions to the slaughter of my (and your) coreligionists and that my position on border enforcement...actually all law enforcement is that if you can't stomach the enforcement then you can't stomach the law, and if you can't stomach the absence of the law then you must stomach the enforcement.
The anarchy of open borders does not appeal to me in quite the same way that you appear to believe it appeals to you, so there we are. Kids get locked up for hopping the fence and Aladdin gets what's coming to him for stealing that loaf of bread instead of getting a goddamn job and paying for it like a civilized human being.
Verbose right wing blather
You're just so very boring, Roman.
(eyeroll)
Not the law
I’m not sure you know what the law is or are looking to enforce it. You are looking to enforce a set of social norms that are rapidly growing outdated and irrelevant.
The law is
that you don't get to declare residency within the United States without applying for the visa appropriate to your circumstances, and the qualifications for those visas are not vague and unspecified.
You're damn right I'm trying to enforce social norms. The specific norms I've got my eye on are the one about following the laws and not ignoring them because you think they're not commie enough.
Irrelevance is an opinion. It is not universally held. Maybe in the bubble where you live it's like oxygen, but your own solipsism is not an argument for anything.
You're crazy
You're crazy. Seek professional help.
Go pound sand, Roman
You're a bigot and an idiot and no one wants to hear you except your bro Fishyfishfishfraud. Hey, is he your sockpuppet or are you his?
Adam, if we start a gofundme, can we get a block function for trolls like Roman? He never has anything useful or intelligent to say, just unimaginative right-wing sophistry, so I'd be happy to never see his comments again.
Yeah, I'm the idiot sockpuppet troll
Here's a helpful life hint jackass: before you start spending your money on getting me banned, how about you actually spend two minutes writing out a cogent refutation of one thing...anything...I've written.
Here's another helpful hint: solipsism is like masturbation. Maybe it feels good. Maybe you want to keep doing it. But in the end all you've done is fuck yourself.
He didn't say you should be banned
He said that he wants to have to option to just not see you.
Why bother?
I have done. It's an exercise in futility. You're a rude, abusive, incoherent sea lion. I'd love the option to not listen to your loud incoherent bullshit any more.
Yes, you certainly have, Roman, and the rest of us don't want any on us.
You've never done it
You have called me a "sea lion" every time I've called you on it, but you've never done it.
Sea lion: what a juvenile non-sequitur.
Now now. Let's not cast
Now now. Let's not cast aspersions on sea lions. They have a valuable place in our ecosystem, whereas trolls could disappear yesterday and we'd all be better for it.
You know, Adam...
it is your banhammer to wield. You're not bound by any constitutional dictate. You could give the Trump brigade the heave-ho, and instantly raise the quality of conversation around here. Most of the regulars would probably appreciate being able to read the comments without wading knee-deep through right-wing excrement,
Do it dude
Show everyone how much of a journalist you are. Then keep on posting about how Trump is Eroding The Norms(TM) of our liberal democracy.
I'm actually pretty sure no one would notice the irony, and if they did they'd interpret it as a commendable departure from SOP for the good of everyone.
Awww
Banning your spew from comments has nothing to do at all with quality journalism.
You really are losing it - provided that you ever had it in the first place.
Seek help
You clearly need it.
Just another dreamer
Deport.
Nah
Just keep him in the same prison as Trump's campaign manager (also, I know facts aren't your strong suit, but the guy in fact has been a US citizen for 10 years now).
Even better
As a citizen, he gets the full force of the law without the free love parade working overtime to get him sprung on a technicality and going to the UNHCR to agitate on his behalf.
Really, man. Do you just sit in your car at Dunkies
and troll this site or are you more of the paranoid shut-in kinda MAGAt?
Since he never seems to talk
Since he never seems to talk about the actual city of Boston, my vote is Russian spambot.
I've never claimed to live in Boston
In fact, I've made it a point not to live inside the city limits anywhere where I've lived as an adult.
I did live in Brookline for a while for the benefit of my wife's commute before decamping to the suburbs, where the streetcrime is nigh-unheard-of, the random-ass street closures are non-existent, and if the neighbors smoke pot it doesn't waft up through the vents.
So
You don't live in Boston, yet you comment incessantly on a hyper-local Boston news site. That is...something.
Also, the claim that the suburbs don't have random street closures is not exactly convincing me you're not typing this from downtown Vladivostok.
Right back atcha
Out here (whereever here is, comrade) the street closures are nowhere near as frequent. That's what happens when everyone isn't packed nose to tail: infrastructure is spread out and the chances of any street needing to be shut down repeatedly for repairs or events or whatever is next to nil.
Of course, in Russia, the repairs aren't made at all, so there's no closures either. So I guess that doesn't prove anything.
A little bit of both
Can't stand dunkies coffee though. I don't know what they do to it but it tastes like condensed milk mixed with shredded plastic.
Sad sack.
I feel bad for you.
If he is a naturalized citizen he can easily be denaturalized
My facts are always on point. Sorry that they are not as liberal as yours.
Clearly, this crime is a violation of the victim's Constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness at a minimum. That's not allegiance to the Constitution by the convicted naturalized felon. Violation of the oath is indeed cause for denaturalization and deportation. As President Trump would say, get him out of here!
Just like Roman
Roman can be denaturalized, too. Very, very easily. For no reason.
That's absolutely not how it
That's absolutely not how it works.

Denaturalization is (intentionally) not an easy process.

At least do some googling before you start trolling.
um
where exactly in the Constitution is the pursuit of happiness
"Dreamer"
Did you know "dreamers," by which I assume you're trying to mean "immigrants" on average commit less crime than "real" Americans like yourself? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/06/19/two-charts-demoli...
I'm not sure we should qualify you as a "real" American anyway, seeing how you don't know that the "pursuit of happiness" isn't even the goddamn Constitution, it's in the Declaration of Independence.
Ignorance and racism are a terrible combination, friend. Educate yourself, like a real American should.

Please read the Defense atty's...
...sentencing recommendation. (It's one of the attachments.) It gives some history about this guy.
When I first read the headlines about this case, I figured it was likely prosecutorial overreach. Hardly the first time, esp. for the U.S. Atty's Office in Boston.
But now I have no idea. This guy (Ryan Lin) seems to be as brilliant in cognitive skills as he is dysfunctional in social skills. 17½ years in the hoosegow isn't going to cure that. But I have no answer as to what might be a more appropriate resolution.
