Don't leave your hydrogen peroxide on the roof

The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters are at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 207 Porter St. in East Boston, trying to figure out what to do about a five-gallon container of hydrogen peroxide on the roof that is leaking.

There are no injuries and the 9th & 10th floor were evacuated as a precaution.

Dilute! Dilute! Dilute!

I assume this is the industrial-strength, very caustic stuff, not the 3% drugstore solution.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

The stuff you get at CVS is 3 to 6% hydrogen peroxide.

For laboratory use, 30 wt% solutions are most common. Commercial grades from 70% to 98% are also available, but due to the potential of solutions of more than 68% hydrogen peroxide to be converted entirely to steam and oxygen (with the temperature of the steam increasing as the concentration increases above 68%) these grades are potentially far more hazardous and require special care in dedicated storage areas.

The stuff you get at CVS is even more dilute than that — 1 or 2%. I think the kind for contact lens cleaning (with a catalyst to neutralize) is 3%.
