$15 oatmeal cookies go on sale for first time in Massachusetts
By adamg on Tue, 11/20/2018 - 9:09am
OK, OK, but they also have peanut butter. Oh, and 42 mg of marijuana baked in. NBC Boston reports on the first legal sales of recreational marijuana this morning, in Leicester and Northampton.
In honor of the event, Tinker Ready writes the ultimate pot pun story. The Dig covers the different types of pot stories.

It's been an hour and a half since opening
Are they sold out of inventory yet?
I can picture Kevin White's reaction
if he were still alive.
Fifteen dollars for an oatmeal cookie? I don't care if it will get me high, it's still outrageous.
And then he would have concluded ...
Mother a Gawd!
if you miss an update
The Globe is tweeting about this approximately every 90 seconds
On Facebook, it's not just the Globe
Every fourth or fifth story on my news feed is a tie-in to this "historic" (lol) event. Kind of reminds me of the hype when Krispy Kreme opened their first store in Massachusetts. And we saw what eventually happened to them.
They haven't had enough to
They haven't had enough to mellow out yet.
Much like their Red Sox
Much like their Red Sox coverage. Do they have a financial interest in this too?
twitter
My twitter feed right now is nothing but green and 420 :-)
Majiuana is simply a
Delivery system for THC, as is cookies, gummy bears and other such novelties. THC has been legalized which has far ranging consequences. There is a great TED talk on this and what is going on in Colorado.
I'm sure it must be BAD!
This educational film told me so!
That’s about grass
The THC for sale now is highly refined and concentrated. It is a different drug than your grandaddy’s toke.
You got any tea?
I once had a landlord who was old enough to have started smoking in the beatnik era. He used to drop by once in a while if he needed some and ask, "Hey, you guys got any tea? You know, the kind you smoke."
One time we were talking about the anti-pot scare tactics that were going around warning parents "This isn't the pot you tried in college, this stuff is WAY more powerful today with ten times the THC in it." He thought that was hilarious. He said that while the current stuff was more powerful, it didn't get you any more high in the end. He said back then they'd sit around smoking five or six joints where now you just need one or two hits.
Guess what
THE LEVELS ARE TESTED!
Get this, too: some of us are wayyyy old enugh to remember when it was popular to adulterate the weed, too.
What you get now in a LEGAL store: organic, tested for pesticides and biologicals, THC content ON THE LABEL.
When did you ever get that on small baggies?
That's actually a really good
That's actually a really good deal for 42mg's. I mean not that I know anything about that type of thing...lol
Don't look at CA prices then
I'm hoping market forces will bring the price down as more places open. For example, at Cultivate here you can get a pack of gummies with 40 mg of THC for $15, choosing a random place in San Francisco I found a pack of gummies with 100 mg of THC available for $18.
Quality Quality Quality!
I keep seeing saying "but in California (or Colorado) its xxx price for yyy amount"
Let me just tell you that MA is going to lead at quality. CA and CO do not heavily test their products and have far lower thresholds on what is sell able and what is not. Sure its cheaper but the quality may not be there. Also good to note that quality in CA and CO can greatly vary from place to place. Here.. not so much (at least as a MMJ card holder)
Much like Tobacco
the limiting factor is taxes. The price won't come down all that much. The margins will be too slim when trying to keep pace with street price with the taxes added in. I know its the equivalent of growing gold from a pot of soil but the admin costs, lab testing, security, etc. adds up. Also these places are more or less strong-armed into where they can operate, not a lot of freedom of choice when it comes to finding a brick and mortar location. Once a place is approved they better buy the building because their landlord now has them over a barrel. Don't wanna pay higher rent? Cool. Shut down for two years while you fight residents to open elsewhere.
One area where they can save is payroll since everything needs to be done in cash since its still federally illegal and banks won't touch their business. Lots of room for skimping there.
All this to say the black market will do just fine despite legalization all because of politicians ruining the spirit of the law. Good on them!
So, will it be another 2
So, will it be another 2 years before a shop actually opens in Boston?
There are applications processing
I would be surprised if there weren't at least a few options in metro Boston by the end of Q1 2019.
Just did a first legal MA purchase!
My man went to the dispensary in Northampton.
He did several things that made it much easier:
1. pre-ordered what he wanted via the dispensary web site
2. biked there from UMass Amherst via the bike trail system
3. used a debit card via their "instant ATM" feature - works like an atm, but transfers the cash directly rather than via paper cash.
Pre-ordering put him in a seven person line, rather than the line snaking around the parking lot. About fifteen minutes of wait and purchase time. Biking meant that he skipped the traffic and parking clusterfrack entirely (note that medical purchasers had special spots and lines). "Instant ATM" debit card option cost a $2.50 fee (credit union will likely cover it) but meant that he didn't have to carry a lot of cash around.
