Beer columnist gives up column to save his life

Norman Miller has written about beer for the MetroWest Daily News for 12 years now. He announced today he's giving it up:

I am killing the Beer Nut so Norman Miller has a chance to live.

I’m killing myself. That’s not hyperbole, it’s the truth. My lifestyle is killing me. I’m middle-aged and obese. I need to make changes so I can see 45, let alone 50 or beyond.

Good for him, I hope he gets to his goals.

The problem with beer for people who like to eat is not only the beer itself but it also leads us to bad decisions. If I am drinking I am normally in a place surrounded by bad food choices. It is not hard to rack up 2k calories on top of your normal daily consumption if you have 5 beers and bar food.

I've found if I do go out with friends and want a drink I will try to go for the wine now. For some reason it does not quite trigger the same binging that beer does for me. I can easily have a glass or two with some small food items. Plus red wine is supposed to offer some benefits to the heart to help offset the negatives.

With all his writing experience I hope he considers writing a blog or a book about his new journey.

Back when I was running, I stopped drinking beer. For me, the analysis was simple: I knew exactly how much work, sweat, and soreness it took to run off a single beer. At that level, it was rare that a beer was "worth it" for me.

...I justify the beer I drink by riding my bike so many hours a week.

Although, the amount of beer I drink these days is minimal.

Anyways, good for this guy. That's a tough decision giving up something that is a major part of his life in more ways than one. Good luck to him.

be a hard decision. It represents giving up something he obviously loved, enough to not just be a consumer, but a critic and evangelist, which tends to be a lot more work. Hope he finds his way back to a healthier lifestyle.

It must be very hard giving up something that you love that also helps pay the bills. But, also, he will be changing his whole persona -- how he sees himself and how people see him. I'm sure his image has been the "big guy who drinks and loves beer" for a long time. He won't be that guy any more.

I always thought his enthusiasm was charming. It sucks to have to give up something you love so much, but with beer being an abundance of calories in such an easily consumed form, it makes sense to cut it out of your diet first.

Hope nothing but good things for him, and hopefully he still finds the opportunity to reward himself in a healthier frequency.
