CommonWealth reports the Herald's hedge-fund owners are laying off four ad-layout workers, two reporters and at least one person in IT. The ad jobs, at least, are being outsourced to Michigan.
Also, the paper has started a paywall for its Web site.

...of the hedge fund managers?
These children will now never know want or need.
They will be pampered and sheltered for their entire lives thanks to daddy knee-capping, beheading, the picking the bones of an old media enterprise.
The holy and glorious free market of republican psychopathy is living its best life right now.
'Murica indeed.

The reality is that things are moving to the web and unless you charge for your content, you'll lose out. (Although don't get any funny ideas Adam.)

This is the Herald, a traditional blue collar readership. Will they be willing to shell out for a subscription??

Fox news took their readership and turtleboy + Facebook covers the local stuff.

his blog is hardly news. Nor would I ever say he "covers" the local stuff. Aidan started his antagonistic blog to bully and embarrass various people in and around Worcester and then gradually expanded his range. At least the Herald covers news, in addition to the opinion pieces.
Correct that TB is not news

But that’s what the herald customer wants. The can read that, consider themselves informed and say it proves everything they’ve always said.
Only if someone will pay it.

There are any number of "news" outlets for which I wouldn't pay a dime. I do have some paid online subscriptions, but none of them are to the Globe or Herald. I do NOT want any of my money going to Jeff Jacoby or Howie Carr.
If I want news, I come here to UHub.
Ads Galore now

I hadn't looked at the hearld's website in eons until a few days ago.
OMG so many ads, and they require you to unblock them from ad blockers.
I thought I was on some spam site with all the hoverover banners and pop ups.
And on Chrome I get blocked

And on Chrome I get blocked if a use an ad blocker.

To be fair, other sites do the same thing - the Washington Post for example. Personally I have no problem turning off ad blocker for specific sites, if I enjoy their content AND the ads are minimal, as it's a way to support without having to subscribe. But for obnoxious levels of ad usage, I just go elsewhere.
Pay for the Herald?

I don't know why anyone would -- whether online, on a newsstand, or for home delivery.
Competition is good

I'd like to see them survive, mainly to keep the rest of the media on their toes. Seems like The Dig is doing more good journalism than a lot of the more established players.

But soon this town will be fed its news from the only daily left; a vanity project for a billionaire who got bored with petty pedestrian things such as mlb world championships.
And that is a very bad thing.

because competition is good for a city. It was well worth reading in the 1990s, but it isn't now. And I don't see how these moves are going to return it to health.

It seems most don't realize the benefits of a two paper town. Not that either paper is a smidgen of what they used to be.

Because I want to read both sides of the story.
Now, the $3+ (I get delivery) for the Globe is a bit ludicrous, but what can you do. I spend $5 a day on news.
A paywall for the Herald?? Last one out, shut off the lights.

As someone already pointed out Herald readers get their news from FB now, and don't even know why that's a bad thing. They're not going to pay for news when their king tells them to listen only to him.
Faster

I'm not a Herald reader, but not only do I want newspaper competition, but the Herald news notifications are superior to the Globe's. Or at least faster.

There are still are (were) least 8 people working at the Herald. So at least Howie Carr can turn out the lights.
"Outsourced to Michigan"?

To the state? A company located in that state? A call center? A marketing firm? Seems a pretty big move for it not to matter...
