Price no longer right for Channel 7

PriceMichael Page reports Randy Price has left WHDH "in a mutual agreement."

Bay Windows has more on Price, who was the country's first openly gay news anchor.

Price, long a fixture on Boston TV, had been with Channel 7 since 1998. He lives in Kittery, Maine.

Globe profile of Price from 2007.

Nooo! Randy is the only thing left on WHDH! Everyone else there is under-30 and lacking experience!

Maybe he'll go to Ch. 5 and NECN, isn't that where news people go to die?

The Bay Windows link isn't working.

Looks like Bay Windows changed the URL between the time they sent it out in RSS and the time you tried it.

It is inexplicable why they would do this. Channel 7 is only second dumbest of the local news shows--channel 5 being the dumbest of all. I think Mr. Price made it a little less dumb--but I guess they want it to be even more inane and idiotic than it already is--so getting rid of Price will probably do that and appeal to the tons of 25 year olds watching their outdated, focus group/local news consultant driven drivel. So I guess it isn't the least bit inexplicable.

Why is Randy Price "less dumb" than the other anchors?

They all just read cue-cards!!

I was under the impression that many of them were involved in the actual mechanics of the news as well, and were not just empty suits sitting in front of a teleprompter.

I think he's definitely less likely to attempt the "fun" asides and cutesy "wisdom" offered by that really dumb guy on the channel 5 news whose name I can't even be bothered to look up. You know the one.

See, Adam, you'd be a perfect fit for the Boston Herald! At least as a copywriter.

A new improved News Director is needed for Neighborhood Network
News http://nnnonline.org/ that will make the entire cable
newscast available on the web not just a few segments. It's
ironical that a local person isn't chosen as News Director at
http://nnnonline.org/ given the local mission of Boston
Neighborhood Network http://www.bnntv.org Instead the current
news director has been chosen over local talent and lacks the
energies to put the newscast on the web only making it
available to cable TV subscribers and limiting access. What
kind of public access community TV fails to see the evolution
of the web as a compatible outlet?... The answer is
Neighborhood Network News and Boston Neighborhood Network.

Cambridge Enthusiasts are needed at Cambridge Community
Television http://cctvcambridge.org to produce a newscast
in cooperation with Nightly News
at WMBR-FM MIT Cambridge radio 88.1

This is SOP from Ansin -- when an anchor gets "too big" either in terms of salary or reputation, it's out the door with them. By this point, surely all the on-air people at WHDH know this and must have their clip tapes ready to mail to every news director in the country on a moment's notice. At least this time they let Price have the dignity of saying he "resigned". Usually, the deposed individual simply disappears from the newscast and the promo spots, rather like the rearrangement of the portraits on the Kremlin walls.

If he's smart, Price will move on to another market and keep his career going, unlike some of the sorry sad-sacks who lost their jobs and have turned into pathetic charity cases, begging for scraps of work because they couldn't bear to leave Boston.

Calling NECN, calling NECN, your next aging anchor is ready for duty...

I've heard the theories that Price was overpaid or too popular, but honestly, when you have channel 7 who doesn't have much else, is that really what a rational business does. Contrary to the comments about anchors reading cue cards, you are not talking the same thing. Randy has been covering news in New England and is hardly a cue card reader.

Whatever the reason, I really think 7 will pay the "price" in ratings for getting rid of Randy and then putting out that lie about his wanting to retire. That's some pretty low stuff aimed at a guy who is loved in Boston. Without a guy who actually brings some humanity to that channel, they are purely unwatchable smoke and mirrors.
